Sounds very fast and very furious to me. What exactly will be your line of defense for fighting it? Curious.

So you were doing 86 and crossed over 3 lanes of traffic? You're gonna kill someone, bud.

i got clocked once driving 83 in a 55. paid 400 dollars. then i never drove more than 10 MPH over the speed limit again. but i dont see how you will fight it unless you can falsely prove that you were driving under 86 MPH. because the lane change thing is pretty concrete. but the MPH maybe.

Just pay the ticket, it'll probably be less taxing in the long run.

If you don't have the $$ to pay for $400 tickets, then don't drive in a manner that will get you one.

Pretty simple life lesson.

i was in the 3rd lane and my exit was coming up

and no1 was near me

In RI if u have a clean driving record u can get a ticket waived

i plan to ask for community service or ticket lowered

Your post count shows you're kind of a newb. I hope you can take the flaming you're bound to get (and are already getting)

Honestly, your best bet is to get a lawyer and get a "prayer for judgement" or whatever it's called in your state.
Your "clean" record will make it easier for the lawyer to get it for you

"Prayer for Judgement" in NC is "I'm sorry, please don't punish me. I promise to be a good driver for the next XX years until the ruling is dropped off my record"

sorry to hear about your ticket(s) guy...i've heard of people going to a dealership and getting their speedometer checked and bring the papers (never done this so it sounds dumb) to the hearing and pretty much say there's no way you were going as fast as the cop clocked you for...dont know, that could help *shoulder shrug* as for the lane change, if no one was near you, did you really have to be speeding in the left lane

and in defense for you young man, everyone that's flaming him for driving so fast, relax...like you've never gotten your cars up to 8xmph? if no one was around him, the only one he would've/could've hurt was himself

moog-->well said

The lawyer's fees will probably make the ticket moot, but the reason to get the lawyer is to avoid points on your license.

At that high of a fee, it may be worthwhile getting a lawyer. You may spend $500 on legal fees and reduced court fees but may not have to deal with as many points.

How many points is that?

I don't think you can do it yourself. However I am not 100% sure.

It cost me $350ish. 76 in 55 (construction)
I never had to go to court, the lawyer took care of it for me.

Prayer for Judgement was on record for 3 years. Court date not ticket date
If I had gotten another ticket in those 3 years I would've had to pay both fines plus got a shit ton of points

edit:
agree with above posts
No insurance increase, no points > $350

^^ So it happened in RI?

Check to see if points get transfered from RI, I once got a ticket in MD, it was for $70. I wanted to appeal to avoid the points but found out that MA insurance doesnt get points that you receive from other states, the list of states might have RI in it and it might not and if it doesnt then points wont be added to your record.

Not passing jusdgement on the OP, but I have found that the cost of speeding tickets is FAR too high to risk getting one.

Used to be $50 or $60 for 10 - 20 mph over and no insurance points. I could handle that once or twice a year.

Couple years ago I was convicted (actually, pled guilty) to 36 in a 35. Ticket cost? $160.

(I was stopped and cited for 44 in a 35, but had it reduced. The conviction is what drives the fine and goes on the record though, not what you were cited for).

I got a ticket coming back from Foxwoods (I was in Conn) and I was going to fight it as well until I found out the points don't hit me. Then I just paid it and I never saw the points on my record.

I recently had a similar situation in New Hampshire at the Massachusetts border. I was driving way too fast at 7:30 AM on a Sunday in February and got caught. Mine was considered wreckless driving and the best bet is to take a defensive driving course so that when you got court, you can tell the judge that you have taken action to improve your driving and will lessen your punishment. The courses are run through AAA, you just have to call and get one in your area. They are $50 with a AAA Membership and will reduce your demerit points on your record depending on the severity of your actions. Ironically, I'm going for my class tomorrow and it will save my license.

You're probably pissed off, much like I was when I got pulled over, but in all honest, that cop might have saved your life. I can say that my incident absolutely gave me a new perspective and there is no way I'll ever drive as fast as I was that day. Good luck with the fight.
