Nothing major; just have to replace the tires in the next week or so. Looks like I'll be getting the same Bridgestones I got before. I've been quite happy with their performance, they just aren't a long-life tire.

I'm almost at 20k miles. As I understand it, the average is closer to 15K for these tires, so I think I did pretty well.

Honestly, though, if you were following the BF Goodrich Comp-2 thread at all you probably saw I was considering those as a replacement and I probably would have gone that route to get a few more miles out of my tires if the size for the rear on the M5 was going to be available before September.

So, last night I was at the office rather later than usual and left for home at about 8PM. As a result of the lateness of the hour, the streets near my office were deserted. That, combined with the fact that I am about to replace my tires, led to an adolescent moment at the stop light exiting my office complex. I went outside today to see if I'd left anything behind. See the "damage" below:

There is nothing adolescent about laying a nice strip on a deserted road after a long day at work, I find it cathartic.

Nice strip by the way, I can only get to lay strips that long while going around a bend. I guess it helps with you having almost 600hp on tap, lol

It probably would have been longer had I not started to fishtail.

It's definitely a rare color. I remember posting in this thread when you were looking for the M5, great to see it come full circle.

I spotted this one at the last C&C in Houston.

[sigh] I may need to get rid of this car; I just do not have the self-discipline to drive it slow...this morning I just got my first ticket since I was 19. 58 in a 45. Going to set me back another couple of hundred $'s to do the online traffic school.

My new tires went on yesterday...no more burnouts.

ETA: BTW, just in case anyone reading runs spacers, Discount Tire will no longer re-install them. It's turned into a bit of a headache for me.

Was in Orange County couple days ago, and heard (quite possibly) the loudest exhaust in my life. It was a grey m5, and the thing roared @ idle, and when he slowly pulled away from the plaza and boned out onto Brookhurst, it set off 3 cars @ a distance. I've heard pretty loud exhausts on some modded 300sx and S2k's but half the decibel compared to that bmw.

It was sick. I've been youtubing loud m5's exhausts but found nothing as loud as the one I heard. Hope to get some answers here!

Tim don't get rid of it! Maybe you just need a slower DD and then have the M5 for the weekends

And 13 over isn't bad. I got a 92 in a 65 back in November and just recently had it reduced to 74 in a 65

Yeah...let's just say on Friday, that might have been the straw that broke the camel's back. There are some other recent developments that may result in me trading in my dream car. It was a VERY depressing weekend. I'll post more later.

Okay, here’s the update. I will preface it by saying that I am very unhappy with this potential development. I love this car. I did my homework before I bought the car, and I wanted to keep the car for a long time, if not permanently. I mentioned previously in this thread that, if it was cost effective, I hoped to purchase another extended warranty when my current one was up, etc.

Additionally, as has been discussed in this thread, my firm does cover at least a portion of my maintenance and repair costs; for those of you who followed the Saintor debacle, you know I don’t have the firm cover 100% - I take into consideration the mileage spent on personal v. work as well as what I believe is “reasonable” for the firm to pay. For example, when my clutch goes, it will likely cost around $3k; I don’t think it’s reasonable for the firm to bear all of that, so I would pick up a chunk of that personally.

That plan was fine until recently; two things changed.

First, extended warranties are going away for this car; at least reasonably priced ones. The company through which I currently have my warranty (through 89k miles) recently announced it will take on no new warranties on E60 M5s. Their claim history has been horrible and they’ve decided they can’t make any money on them. They’ve also stepped up their diligence on claims for existing warranties. The current stories are very concerning. Other companies are stepping up their prices substantially; I’ve heard of one that hit the $10k mark to purchase.

Second, as I’ve also mentioned briefly before, I am bearing a significant portion of the financial responsibility for my mother. At the time I purchased the M5, it seemed we had things under control and manageable. Things have worsened, considerably, and they aren’t likely to get better. On average, the support has ballooned to $500-$1,000/mo for her, especially as it relates to medical bills.

So, it occurred to me that, at this point, the M5 is still considered “low mileage” (at least according to kbb) – 5 years old, 60k miles, ~12k/yr. If I wait another year, that won’t be the case given how quickly I pack on miles (I’ve done 20k in the year I’ve owned the car). As it stands, I owe ~$25k on the car, and might be able to trade it for as much as $34k. If I’m going to move on from this car, now is the time. My maintenance and repair burdens will only worsen, as will the depreciation on the car, not to mention the impact of the rate at which I put on miles. The combination of these facts, along with the aforementioned two developments, leads me to believe that it’s probably not going to work to keep the car.

Therefore, I’m looking for any and all suggestions from my friends here. Fire away.

FYI – I’ve started looking at some cars. Here’s what I’m considering so far:

A5 (test drove it today; it’s smooth, but not a lot of power) - http://www.autotrader.com/cars-for-s...21398782&Log=0

GS350 - http://www.autotrader.com/cars-for-s...20063607&Log=0

Genesis Sedan - http://www.autotrader.com/cars-for-s...19882189&Log=0

Genesis Coupe - http://www.hyundaiusa.com/build-your...0domain727.com

Sorry to hear Tim

I think you're doing the right thing, even though it's a decision I wish you weren't faced with.

As for a new car, a friend from high school recently got a Genesis Sedan. While I've never though much of them, the interior is goreous and VERY comfortable. He has the 3.8 V6 and it has plenty of get up and go. It's smooth and relaxing to drive. Plus maintenance is reasonable.

Man, that's rough. It's unfortunate, but I agree with Tyler; you're doing the right thing. As for a replacement, Genesis sedan R-Spec. The A5/S5 is gorgeous but underpowered for the money, which is typical for Audi for some reason.

Sometimes I think about that in regards to my car. Because I drive it so infrequently...when I do drive it I WANT TO DRIVE THE SHIT OUT OF IT.

But tickets happen. Ive gotten one in my car. Myself and my wife knew it was inevitable. Paid the fine, took the school...hopefully Im good for 18 months.

Let it blow over for a week and then revisit the thought. Don't do anything rash.

EDIT:

Never mind I just read your follow up post. Yeah you gotta do what you gotta do.

Besides...in a few years you can pick up a used F10 M5...and it looks WAY better anyway

Seriously though...when it comes to family you have to do what you have to do. I LOVE my car, and planned to keep it until the day I die...assuming it doesn't blow up or get wrecked...but it things become different from a family/financial perspective...I'll do what I need to.

You got your priorities straight, things happen for a reason.

No tribe!!! But after reading the update, I definitely understand your situation.

Priorities come first, and its better to sell your m5 while the appraisal is still pretty high (given miles and year.)

I say the Genesis is a good choice, possibly the spec r? Those lights

The new Genesis coupe look sick also, the base 2.0T is now 270 hp? 273 torque (might not be the exact specs) and its RWD. Pretty solid if you ask me, and then theres the V8 one lol. I think you're better off with the V8...Since you'll be coming from a V10 500HP+ engine lol...

Really sorry to hear Tim. It may not work out now, but that doesn't mean it can't happen in the future!

The Lexus is a solid car but in typical Lexus fashion, a bit dull.

The Genesis is just sweet. I've heard good things about the 4.6.

A5 is just sexy.

Sorry to hear but certainly understand under the circumstances. Hope things at least stabilize with your mom. Car wise, at least you have had the pleasure for a year.

What ratio of cost, comfort and power is most attractive to you? I recently had a casual conversation with an accountant who made a very good case for his new Charger (R/T or SRT) = bang for the buck. Nothing is going to give you all that you currently have without similar cost or risk. G/L with whatever you decide on.

True, it seems low on paper, but once you get behind the wheel, it feels as though it has more. Thats the experience I had with the TT-S, and A4 anyways when I test drove them. But then again, all those engines need is a chip tune for more power.

But I agree, the R Spec is noiceee

Sorry to hear that you are selling the M5. That is a sweet car.

We have a 2008 535xi that we got used about a year and a half ago as it was a little cheaper, a little better on MPG, and still plenty fast enough to get into lots of trouble if I am not careful. We found one in a manual transmission and we liked it better than some of the 3 series and G35/g37s we were checking out.

We are right at the edge of the warranty with 49800 miles so I am wondering about an extended warranty as well since this car has been in the shop a good deal. I was trying to sell ours as we have a baby on the way and I wanted to cut costs, and get something cheaper and with the warranty up soon, things might get expensive. I still need to convince the wife that we should sell it too.

All your replacements are good picks. Since you are looking to cut costs, I would go with one of the Hyundais. I test drove both the Genesis Sedan R spec and a Genesis Coupe about a year ago and both are quite nice. Luxury and a bit more overall cost go with sedan. I plugged in a 2007 M5 into the edmunds true market value which give you that average estimate over 5 years of fuel, depreciation, repairs, insurance etc and, wow, the M5 is crazy expensive. $87k!

Your replacements will be closer to $50 or less depending on what year.

Good luck!

T, I'll trade you my very reliable TL for the M5 + bacon.

What sucks about the whole situation is it's not really a financial decision because you only owe $25k on it (pretty much the cost of a replacement not considering what you'd make on top of it). It's the fact that it's just a beast to fix anything on it. I'm not sure if it's because the parts are so hard to come by or not too many shops who know how to fix it are fair in their pricing. It's a shame. If I ever owned one, I'd rather spend the money in my garage so I can fix it.

Do what you have to do T. Hopefully that includes driving out to me so we can put on a new set of tires, if you get my drift.

Hope your mom gets better.
