Great review. I love seeing long-term owner reports. Glad you like your M5 and the E60 is truly a beast.

Thx. I'd still be watching you pull away with the extra 60hp you're running.

Mods - maybe we should change the thread title to "ttribe's M5 Thread"...or "ttribe's M5 Midlife Crisis Thread"...which ever suits your fancy.

Superb M5 Tim, it looks really good. Indianapolis is somewhat of a rare color too as I don't see them often. I had a Silver E39 M5 quite a while ago and came really close to getting an E60 a couple of times. Almost wish I did as I'm not a fan of the F10 at all. Hope she gives you many more miles and please by all means, vist the track.

- The other BIG failure I see from time to time (and this is the really scary one) is a failure of the VANOS oil pump (think of VANOS like VTEC) that results in catastrophic damage to the engine.
Ouch. Curious... do you have an oil pressure gauge (not a light) in that car?

You are doing a lot of mileage (16K miles in 9 months, right?).... if it was me, I would have another cheaper car and make only 5-10K miles/yr on that one. It can become expensive very quickly. Check just the price of the rotors vs a regular non-M car...

No. Just temp gauge.

About 4K of those miles were from some roadtrips I took with the car shortly after I got it. I do put on a lot of miles, but that's not a normal rate.

Yes, I know about the expense. Fortunately, my firm (in which I am a partner) picks up a significant portion of the maintenance costs. I'm also aware of the brake costs - I've already done the front brakes (pads and rotors installed = $1,300) and am about to do the rear in about 2k miles. I had done my research before I bought the car. I knew what I was getting into.

BTW, my extended warranty runs till 89K miles, at which point I will likely get another extended warranty to at least get me to 100k.

Not to be Debbie Downer, and from an earlier post, looks like you are already aware of the potential fails for this car. I had an '06 M5 in Interlagos Blue. As soon as i got out of warranty (around 51k) my A/C pulley stripped out and a/c quit working. Roughly a $1700 fix. At 53k, my SMG tranny threw a red "failure" warning and was going to cost me about $7500 in total (Northern VA dealer).

I actually traded my M5 in for an '11 TL SH-AWD. i actually consider it an even trade given i can use all 300hp of the Acura and still get 20mpg vs. sitting in traffic in the M5 and getting 11mpg. I've been very happy with my decision and I'm having fun with the Acura. i actually think it holds turns better, too.

Anyhow, M5 is an awesome beast, but there is a steep cost of ownership. Good luck and have fun!

It's funny how all the sudden everyone is chiming in with the cost of maintenance thing. I'm pretty sure tt figured that all out before he made the purchase. He's a pretty smart dude.

SuperTrooper is right. Sorry for my earlier post. I intended to just throw a thumbs-up to the TL saying i'm enjoying it as much as an M5, but my post turned into a whining complaint about maintaining a $96k vehicle.

TTribe did the smart thing buying an extended warranty, and it is something i should have considered, too.

No, I wish I could say there were, but I've been working 50+ hours/week for 4 months now. Plus, some family obligations have been consuming my disposable income...no extras for the car right now. I'll probably need a new set of tires this summer though. Thinking about getting the same Bridgestones again, or maybe the new BF Goodrich tires that have similar performance, but a better tread wear rating.

The best update - it's still super-fast and has been quite trouble free for quite a few months (after some repairs when I first brought it home).

Here's a question, no clue if answered before. You have 55k+ miles now, how often do you still get above 5k rpm on this thing?? O.o

Are you afraid of accelerating too fast too often?

edit: man i dont know why i havent visited this thread much! Didnt know you were doing updates.

I've never understood this, why do firms like yours pay for maintenance of your car and such. Do you take clients in it often or something?

Not at all. The performance of the engine is as strong as ever. I hit 7 and 8k rpms without hesitation.

I'm a part owner in the firm. This arrangement is in recognition of the fact that the vast majority of my car's use is work-related.

Very unusual arrangement, I wonder the fiscal extents of this. When I use my car for the company, it is a fixed rate; 0.50$/km.

Oh look, he comes in and craps all over T's thread.

In all honesty, saintor, please restrict yourself from commenting on (a. Anyones financial situation other than your own, and (b. something you know nothing about.... Which tends to be a lot.

It would make the board as enjoyable as it was before and the earth with still turn.

I agree, accusations such as this questions the persons character, and from what the rest of us know, Tim is a great guy.

Why on earth would he need to cheat the IRS? You spewing misinformation like that makes you look like a complete moron when you know nothing of the situation. Remember, libel is a bitch.

I thought this thread was about a badass M5...

Anyways...T, can I persuade you to get this Eisenmann exhaust? Some acoustic persuasion, maybe?

Quick warning, have another pair of pants at the ready.

Frankly, you have every right to request him given a time out for accusing, you, a CPA of tax of fraud. Especially given he is not in the US, not a CPA, and doesn't own his own company to the best of my knowledge.
