Truck vs. SUV = OMG

Hope the driver went quick

This video reminds you how quickly something like this can happen. Looks like his tires hit the build up on the center line and after that it was all over.

Wow, I hope he went quickly...and was alone. You'd have to say a little prayer for the guy in the semi even in an impact this severe...and the car that was riding next to the semi. FK.

There is a very simple solution

ESP

Soon to be mandatory on USA cars. With a reason.

ESP succeeded where AWD failed.

is it just me or did it seem like the driving speed was a little fast for that type of road condition?

That's what I was thinking. In a bit of a hurry, had to pass the slow truck. And he drifted to the left of center and he was done.

:RIP: dude. I hope the family doesn't see this.

his speed and road conditions and the degree at which he turned when he lost control

he is just very unfortunate that first truck was there that blocked him from going to the side of the road where he would have probably survived.

It is exactly this kind of situations that it would have prevented. Traction control/AWD would have helped too although we don't know if this Nissan was in 4WD mode. Observing the video, he was coming from the right lane, climbing the hill while accelerating to pass the white van.

Ken is right, it wouldn't have made a difference. I've driven SUVs with and without stability control and it didn't make a difference when I drifted into that stuff. When you get caught in the build up outside the lanes when it snowing, it will just pull the car whatever way it wants, usually further into the slush. The only thing that can help is going slow, having a good grip on the wheel and don't counter steer to much.

Check what ESP will do for you (combined with TC); exactly preventing the kind of excessive slippage we saw in this accident. It will also do something that no driver can; controlling the brakes of an individual corner.

Even better at high speed of 70mph (toward the end of the video).
