Trading the 550i..but for what? Still confused...

Ahhh..my favorite board.

How loved I am here.

Anyway - on to business.

I am thinking of trading in my 550i.

Here are the cars I am looking at:

Audi S5
Infiniti M Hybrid
2011 BMW 550i
2011 BMW 535i

I would like a car that is a bit better on gas than my current 550i ($100 a week as of now!), has similar performance/handling, and interior amenities would be nice although the only 'must haves' are navigation and some sort of parking aid.

I'm open to suggestions.

at some of the responses above.

Out of those suggestions, I'd choose the 550 or the S5.

2012 Acura TL SH-AWD

Its gonna be hard to downgrade from 550i to anything else. Maybe like Jaco said, a 335d? or a 535i?

how would you save any money by trading in your car? you always end up spending more. unless you downgrade and go for a 335d as someone said.

you should just keep it and deal with the gas prices.

Most people here love the new 5 series but I think the front end is damn ugly. I would wait for a 2012 A6.

vs M37

vs A6

Think about it. You're spending money to save money. Doesn't make a whole lot of sense.

But out of your choices I'd go for the S5, but it is a coupe.

Have you considered CPO? E320, or an E60 535i and you could get away without spending too much.

He didn't explicitly say he was looking to 'save money'. Only thing he really mentioned is that he'd prefer something that has better gas mileage.

By his post though, it doesn't sound like that's even the main concern or reason for the trade in.

He never really said he is trading in to save money...

anyway, I would go with the new 5 series. If you want to save more gas you would need to go with the 535i. Thats really the only way you will save gas while keeping the same luxury. Well the new 5 will be a lot more luxurious.

I would wait and see for the new A6.

But in your short list, definitely a 535i; About 20% less fuel than a F10 550i and 10-15K$ less upfront.

anything wrong with the 550 besides gas milage? My boss just sold his 07' but mostly for tax reasons... and needed more space (new kid), so he ended up with a denali.

To me BMW's are pretty unique, so if you really liked the 5 series, you'd have to buy another. If you don't drive too fast, maybe you can get away with the 535 and save some gas.

I know some people that don't like the "complex" interiors of Acura, Infiniti, and Caddy's, but if you want more gadgets and functions/features and more buttons to play with, i'd say go w/ the infiniti. If you want a car that just looks damn good, go w/ the Audi.

In summary:
if you're single: S5
if you're married w/ children: 535
if you're a nerd: Infiniti

Well, in addition to the gas mileage issue, the 550 is also out of warranty and I know repairs/maintenance on it will be bad if/when necessary.

I also like the road presence the 550 has. I think I am leaning toward a 535i. It seems to be the best compromise.

Even accounting for gas and out of warranty repairs, keeping your current 5 will be cheaper than paying the extra $20-$30,000 for a new car.

If you want a new car because you're bored with this one, then by all means. But it doesn't make sense from a financial POV.

Like I mentioned before (he hasn't clarified yet, so....), I don't think this guy is concerned with the cost of purchasing a new car.

Others seemed to take his comment of better gas mileage on his 'wish list' and turn it into 'I need a cheaper car'.

Sounds like it's just a guy who appreciates a nice car, looking for something new, but would prefer it to have better gas mileage than the current status quo if possible.

He makes it sound like his priorities are better fuel economy, and avoiding costly repairs. Sounds like he wants to save money Buying a new car isn't the way to save money.

As far as the warranty, it's not just the cost of repairs, but dealing with having to take it in when/if necessary. And with BMW, it's hard to discount the possibility of that being frequent. That's enough of an annoyance by itself.

That would be enough for me to justify getting something new if I had the disposable income.

Correct. Thank you. Dealing with the hassle of taking in a car for repairs, not having a loaner (out of warranty), paying for parts, labor, missing work, all while driving an older model that takes up more gas and has less amenities than a newer model (no usb, ipod, hard drive, etc.) add up.

I respect my time as much as I respect money.

That plus the current car is a ticket magnet with no front plate, front windshield tinted, windows tinted at 30%.

If I can save a few bucks on gas...why not?

I'm past that now. I need something to drive where I won't get pulled over for doing the speed limit when I do stick to it.

King Raja, if this is still your daily driver that you lease and somehow write off with your dry-cleaning store, why not just lease a '11 535i?

lmao. You got my license plate correctly.

No dry cleaning store. I've moved on. And it's not a lease. I own it.

I only ever leased my first car (G35). Never leasing again.
