Toyota: Winglet news

Ooo...a Segway alternative!

From Worldcarfans...

We have seen several versions of Toyota's i-REAL concept for personal mobility over the past few years, all of which were in the sitting position. Now, Toyota has unveiled their range of personal transport assistance robots, which operate, like the pioneering Segway Personal Transport (PT), in the standing position. Unfortunately, outside of commercial and government internal applications, the Segway PT has failed to capture consumer interest.

However, Toyota feels it has its place in society, particularly as a contributor of sustainability in research and development, manufacturing as well as social contributions to health and comfort of future society.

A unique parallel link mechanism allows the rider to go forward, backward and turn simply by shifting body weight, making the vehicle safe and useful even in tight spaces or crowded environments.

Toyota has created three models, the “L”, “M” and “S”, each having different handling features that allow consumers to select a model appropriate to their needs - from “practical” to “hands-free sporty”.

Toyota aims to have its Partner Robots in practical use in the early 2010s by furthering its robotic development and strengthening collaboration between industry, government and academia.

No doubt they are neat...i've ridden one before...but I didn't think they were in demand enough for another company to build a competitor.

^^ Let's help more Americans get even fatter by eliminating exercise and walking entirely.

Yup, just like Wall-E.

I think I'd be more tired from standing still on one of those all day than I would be if I just walked.

On a side note, there are segway cops on campus here and the first time I saw one I couldn't stop lauging

Not as hard you will when you see them try to chase someone down with one, and if they jump off for a pursuit on foot, take it.

I remember the first time I saw one I laughed also, the look on the guys face. I don't know how to describe it.

we have here in downtown chicago, segway tours. you go with a group of like 10ppl and guide on a tour around the downtown area. its pretty popular. quick, easy to operate. u can get to were u are going much faster then walking. its not bad, i think its a good idea for companies to make em, it'll bring the price down too. i don't think they are the end of the world. great for cops in downtown too. u guys laugh but it makes their job much easier then riding a bike or walking around. i'm not saying you should stop exercising thou

Yeah, you should try reading the names of some of the cars here...That will make you scratch your head.

But what this thing does is drive other design ideas. Maybe not a Segway alternative, but maybe a precursor to an electric motorcycle? Don't know.
