Thinking of buying a used BWM X5....

...but people either have no problems or a TON of problems. I'm looking into a 2002-2003 3.0. If any of you own one, please let me know how it's going, and what issues (if any) you have had.

Thanks!

So long as you can afford all the repairs once it goes out of warranty. I close friend of the family had several Lexus's (proper conjugation) now she has an X5 - can't wait to dump it, too many problems. Not sure if the same is true of X3's, but I can't see BMW making any drastic quality improvements in their lower line SUV. If money is no object and you want the image, then good luck.

Rovers are the last thing you want if repairs are an issue. I was looking at those and the Mercedes ML class and both of them are rolling disasters from a maintenance perspective.

My brother has one, it is his daily driver and he loves it. He said that he sometimes wishes there was a little more cargo room, but most of teh time he can fold the seats to accomodate what ever he is moving around. He has said that he will sell it before the warranty expires just becasue of some of the repairs that have been done under warranty would have cost him a fortune. He did say that he will probably end up with another X5 though.

My dad drives one 4.4i... I must say it hauls for an SUV but the seats are really uncomfortable compared to my TL or even my moms 05 545i.. I'd go ahead and get a used Rover or Porsche SUV if I had that kinda money and wanted an SUV.

Thanks guys, but I guess none of you own an X5. They are not as expensive as you think. I can get an 02-03 3.0 for around $30-33K. As far as the steering and handling, you are crazy if you think a Tahoe or Yukon handles well compared to an X5. I shit you not, the X5 feels and steers like a 5 series sedan.

And Land Rover? Talk about reliability issues....

I'd get a 4runner instead.

You can actually drive a 4runner off road and if power is an isssue, it can be supercharged

If you can wing it, go for it. Out of all the crossover luxury SUVs, the X5 (if I could even afford one!) is by far the one I would not want. You sit in one and then walk over to, say, a Lexus RX330 and it's like going from a compact sedan to a midsize sedan, except in the case of the SUVs, they're in the same size class. They need to do something with the packaging inside cause even the smaller X3 felt almost as big as the X5...
