Most readers here probably frequent multiple automotive forums. Ineveitably, every few months someone will make a post, “Thinking about buying a rebuild/salvage.”
What will follow is likely pages upon pages of people arguing the pros and cons of a rebuild/salvage car. I tend to stick with the party that says, “you are crazy, keep saving money and buy a decent car rather than saving a few thousand.”
Obviously, there are exceptions and I am sure some of you will chime in with hate, saying “omg, I am never reading your blog again, I have a salvage Z06 which is mint and only shakes around 60-70mph!”
Check out the Fifth Gear crash test of two identical cars, one is salvage repaired and the other is all stock. Pretty interesting.

...new cars are designed to save you and get destroyed themselves... on AZ we see some members cars that have had accidents that seem minor and no one has been hurt... I guess it is the SECOND accident that might be the really important one... IMVHO
This is why I get a Carfax every time I look at cars. First thing I ask for is the VIN, otherwise I won't even bother. Some people pay out of pocket so it won't be reported which is even scarier.
No amount saved is worth me or my passengers getting seriously injured.

Cafax is fine if you want to see if the title is salvaged but it doesnt record everything.
Heres my buddys TSX that got hit. He sold it right after it was fixed. https://acurazine.com/forums/showpos...4&postcount=55
It doesnt show up on carfax and the worst part, we found it weeks later for sale at an Acura Dealer... IT WAS CERTIFIED!

Word.
I wish I saved the VIN so I could run a Carfax.
I sold the car to a Lexus dealer, who then in turn sold it to an Acura dealer. The Acura dealer then ran it through their "120 point inspection" BS and viola, Certified Pre-Owned.
It should be have been Certified Pre-Owned with $17k in damage built in.
I had a Montero before my TL that came 100 dollars away from being totaled, then they found another 3000 dollars worth of damage . Carfax came up clean!
It really depends on if the shop reports it or not i think.

I had looked at buying a 2G TL (a 99-01) that was salvaged because the price was great, with the intent of gutting the damn car and making it a trackable car. That idea went away quickly, and judging from that video it's a good thing.
When I was in the biz I did a lot of pre-purchase inspections, more often then not cars off used car dealers lots had been in accidents, carfax usually didn't pick it up but it is very easy to tell. In my 13 year career I only gave a clean bill of health to maybe 5 cars brought in for pre-purchase inspections, often it was minor things, but it certainly wasn't uncommon to see incredibly sketchy repairs like this. I never realized that the outcome would be so dramatic though.
