Think I can flip this 2001 Porsche Boxter?
I'd like a summertime toy. Something I can sell and worst case get all my money back, maybe make something extra. Friend of a friend turned me on to this 2001 Porsche Boxter. Guy just bought a new Camaro and wants to get rid of this. It's black with black inside, 41K miles, 5 speed, has the optional hard top, 3rd owner. Car is real clean.
Prices on Autotrader vary from $16,000 to $18,000.
The owner wants $13,000 for the car and $1,000 for top. I offered $12,000 all in. I think we're close but is it a good deal?

Can't believe its still worth that much. I thought.boxsters new were only in the 40-50 range back then.
I guess its the low mileage and clean condition. I feel 12 would be a food price but I.have no basis for that logic. Good luck

idk, but seems a little high for Wisconsin market. I turned down a 1999 911 hardtop with 33K miles in very nice condition (8/10) for $15K, single owner. A neighbor of my brother's in South Beach Miami area, my brother still thinks I'm a idiot for not buying it and flipping it after a year or so.

If you're going to flip it, I'd say check the usual trade sites to get a round-a-bout figure of what you may be able to sell it for. Also, you have to ask yourself what is the minimum profit gain you are willing to take when you sell it. Also, factor in any maintenance cost that may occur while you own it.

I think it's a pretty good deal. Only thing is, these are much easier to sell in the Spring than Fall if that's what you're planning on doing. Either way, if you can't get rid of it when you're ready, PM me, I have a friend who owns a dealership and would either buy it from you or can sell it for you at auction if you're stuck with it.
Good luck!

I did a bunch of research on these earlier in the year... $12k seems about the right price for those miles. If you resell, you'll break even if you're lucky... but likely lose money.
We're also past the prime selling season for cars like that. Typically they sell like hot cakes in the late winter/spring/very early summer... then it dies off after the 4th of July as people are away on vacation etc. Then school starts, and boom, it's fall/winter, and it's tough to sell then.
I'd say if you want to drop $12k for yourself, go for it. But unless you can get it for a bit less you will not make much, if anything at all on it

Also, most of the prices on Autotrader are typically high. Dealers selling higher then the private market or individuals with high hopes. Check out the Porsche forums or even CL... $11k-$13k is a good range for something like that. Unless it's an S... then you can get a bit more...

OP,
In a seriousness, I remember hearing about some issues with Porsche from that year and it wasn't good. Like bearing problems that caused engine fail. Look into it before you buy.

Safety Car
IMO, no (for the flip).
Just throwing out ball park numbers
6 months to sell/carry costs
+Usual maintenance
+Insurance
+Risk factor of close to $10k in something going terribly wrong
...to make ? $2,000 profit??
Might as well pick out a couple stocks. Just as risky, and youd be working a lot less for your money.
Not to mention, you will be the fourth owner, and a transparent "flipper" to the next buyer....Prepare yourself for what the next buyer would ask you...If I were the next buyer, I would say: tell me why I would want to be the fifth owner of this porsche when i could be the second owner of another market value boxster? Why did you have this car for only a short period of time -- did something go wrong with the car? If not, then how much are you trying to price gauge me on your evident flip?

^^ Either scenario will seem very suspect to the next buyer. IMO, will be a hard sell (for the price you are trying to get). May be stuck with auction/wholesale #s.

My spidey sence is telling me to pass on this. I'm meeting the owner next week so I'll get a better read on how bad he needs to sell. If he's motivated to sell and I can get it for under $12k my feeling is I'd be safe getting my money back. I agree with everyone else that mentioned it is doubtful to make any money though.

If you power slide into a curb, I bet you could flip it.

The sizzle in the Steak
I don't think you will make any coin, or even break even if you sell it.

Whats up with RDX owners?

I'd get a roll bar and a helmet before you flip it. Those loops dont seem like much IMO.

_____ like a rabbit
Hmmmmm..... if it weren't for the amount of owners, i would jump on it. But then again, 12k isnt that much off of what i would pay.

I though a Porsche would be way more!
Makes me think less of them now lol

Wouldn't taxes and title/registration/inspection fees negate any potential ROI?

This would be an ok price for this. I would expect to pick up an s with just a few more miles this fall for that same price. I wouldn't pay more than 11-12k which is where you would be, but you won't make money on it after you pay taxes etc.
Most likely it will hold it's value for the next 3-5 years, you can drive it and sell it in a few years for just a tad lower than what you pay.
