I've got your GM counterpart.. It is great to be living in a time when these cars are being produced, and I can afford one.

mustangs

I also have the Mustang as a fun car. It's a brute! I love that it takes some muscle to drive it. It's an old time muscle like when I wore a younger man's suit. But, the car is much more refined that in the old days. All the features you'd want - ac, pw, pdb, track pack, etc. Drives beautifully all day long. Well behaved on the highway. It would be a good daily driver but it's only a special driver for me.
I still get a blast from driving the TL. It's got gobs of power - it almost feels like a v8. It a great highway car too.

Man, would be interesting to see updates from tonio about the GT350. Very awesome car of course! But looks like hasn't posted since 2016....

How true!

Other than the RDX (no choice, plus that type of vehicle an auto is best) which is an automatic, all of my cars and motorcycles have been a manual by choice. They tried a few automatics in motorcycles; it did not catch on.

Nice car. Time to put on Bullitt.

Agreed on auto vs manual. DCT is a question mark for me. I personally prefer a manual but the speed of a DCT is appealing. A mclaren 720s DCT would out perform any manual/driver in the same vehicle I think. But it's an entirely different animal. For an average driver like me the 5.0L, 6 speed manual gives me all I need. It's more than going in a straight line. These cars handle beautifully.

If I was in competitive racing, sure. But I am on backroads having fun, not interested in getting to the red light first.

Plus, its not the driver anymore when electronics shifts that fast. I would not even consider a PDK in my toy. That 7-speed manual is a treat to drive.

I think that Car and Driver did a 40,000 mile update of a GT350. They loved the car but the engine eats oil. Something like 21 quarts in 40,000 miles.

I've said it before but I think it's really down to the nature/character of the car whether or not an auto suits it. A (modern) McLaren with a manual wouldn't really be all that great just like a S2000 with an auto (even a modern one) would be pretty crappy.

I wouldn't buy an automatic NSX, Mustang, Corvette, Camaro, 911, Cayman, etc just because the manual suits those cars. Likewise I wouldn't buy a manual Wrangler, Golf R, G70, RS3 (if offered), Cayenne, Tacoma, etc just because the manual isn't as good.

JMO of course.

Some of us are in the minority.

Back in the '80s, one of the popular car magazines stated that 80% of Corvettes were automatic.

Now what does that tell you about the American car buying public and their enthusiasm as "drivers".

Yeah, many sports cars are also probably bought for status/image/keeping up with the Joneses. Very very small minority of society are actual car enthusiasts. IIRC, there are still more auto corvettes than manual ones...

I'd wager that this is still true today, I'm sure Mustang and Camaro are the same. Most people are lazy and/or only buy a car for the status it conveys, not for the drive/performance.

Edit: Yup (from 2016):

https://www.roadandtrack.com/new-car...ual-take-rate/

Last week, the National Corvette Museum published a detailed breakdown of 2016 model year Corvette production, which revealed that only 9249 of the 40,689 built came with manual transmissions. That works out to be a little under 23 percent of production, which is down about 10% over 2015's manual Corvette production.

Sad but true. I guess its the difference of the "hey, look at me" driving the downtown boulevard compared to the backroads driver where there is no one to notice you.

Maybe some of us take it too far. I've been to the factory Porsche museum in Stuttgart, the private Porsche museum in Gmünd in Kärnten, the initial building up the road from there where the first car was built as well as the private summer residence of Porsche and also where they have been laid to rest. Plus the countless history books on the brand.
