Story - A girl, the Internet, and her Pontiac Fiero

Pretty cool -

A couple years ago, Jerry DiMaria signed up for an online forum and started a new thread: "A few months ago," he wrote, "our 12 year old DAUGHTER came in and said, 'Dad, Mom, can we talk for a minute?'"

Kathryn had a proposition for them: She wanted to build a car, a Pontiac Fiero.

Holy Toledo Batman! Someone should have told her that you can take a horse to water, but you can't make it drink. A Feiro, even with a 3.4ltr Chevy motor, is still a piece of shit.

I disagree with you on that-- IIRC, the Fiero GT V6 was a decent car for the last two production years or so.

I always liked the GT but it was not the zenith of GM's manufacturing days.

I'm not as concerned with the car she chose (c'mon, think back to when you were her age...), as I am impressed with her ambition on the project.

Amen. The initiative and responsiblity is very impressive. I hope she makes her deadline!!

Cool beans. I imagine that if I asked for the help, I'd get similar help and support here on AZ for a build. That's the magic of online communities. I've gotten all sorts of automotive advice from a bunch of (mostly) guys I have never met.

Now if someone would have taught her how to design the next TL, then we would have a double winner (what she's doing now is tops in my book).

Very impressive young lady! I'm impressed with her dad as well. He's seeing to it that she do most of the work, when possible. Many parents are far too lazy to do this and would much rather just give her a new(er) car. She instead will learn the value in hard work and perseverance. She is very deserving of all the attention and support she is getting.

I call BS on that. There are still a ton of parents from my generation who would love to do this kind of project with their kid, unfortunately hanging out with Dad in the garage is "NOT COOL." Maybe even "ghetto" as far as they are concerned.

It's these kinds of stories that still give me faith in humanity. Good to see someone so young who has so much ambition, I really hope she makes the deadline.

I didn't use all, or even most. I used the word "many," and couldn't be more accurate. The truth is, there are many lazy parents in our world. I see it every day both in person and on TV. Yes, there are parents that refuse to take the easy way out in things, but many others choose the easiest solution when it comes to nutrition and activity.
