Stop me from buying an IS-F!

Sorry for stealing the thread title from SicK TypeS, but I need a reality check here. I just participated in a dealer-sponsored IS-F dyno day and will be test driving one tomorrow. I'm really liking this car, and that's after giving the IS350 a decided "meh".

Here are my pros and cons:

Pros:
- Definite Jekyll and Hyde personality. Comfortable and very quiet until you hit the loud pedal.
- The auto tranny is very slick, especially in full manual mode.
- Probably more reliable than BMW or Mercedes. It seems substantially overbuilt, and I'll be keeping the car long-term.
- The Ultrasonic Blue Mica is gorgeous!
Cons:
- Pretty darn pricey for an IS.
- The looks, although the side vents and other ricey bits aren't as obvious in person.
Anyway, talk me out of this thing!!

Don't buy one. You will get your ass handed to you by the M3 and C63, and still pay just as much. Go German or go home.

The good news is that you wont see them all over the place. I'm sure they're pretty bad ass in the metal and behind the wheel. I've only ever seen one at the auto show last March.

C63 AMG, BMW M3, RS4 >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> IS

Besides reliability, I wouldn't even consider it. Doesn't look or perform as good as the german rivals for practically the same price.

Depends on what your main concern is. If it's you want the fastest or quickest around a track, then don't, but if it's a combo of the pros you listed above, then go for it. I saw a maroon one a few weeks ago and besides the odd stacked tailpipes it was lovely. We need pictures pronto if you do pull the trigger!!!

I've give it to you on the looks, but it's held up pretty well in comparisons. Of course the ///M3 is a more focused machine and I give it all due respect. The C63 seems like more of a blunt instrument to me. They are all great performers.

And let me be honest, I'm never going to track the car so it isn't vital that it be a road course champion. I would never approach the limits of any of these cars on public roads. And ultimately the Lexus would price out cheaper feature for feature.

Do it! I saw an IS-F in that special blue that they offer and it was drop dead gorgeous.

And i'm probably the only one that feels this way, but I've grown to love the stacked exhausts.

You owe it to yourself to check out the new E92 BMW M3 since you're shopping in the same price range with the IS-F. Nobody knows how reliable either car is just yet, since they're both practically brand new. For all we know, the 8-speed tranny in the IS-F could be the biggest piece of junk a few years down the road. Its not likely, but you never know. This is Lexus' first attempt at a sports sedan. BMW has been doing this for YEARS, and they have mastered the art. Not to mention, if the time should ever come, the resale value on the M is top notch.

The E92 M3 is jaw dropping in real life. Pictures do this car ZERO justice, it really is a work of art. The agressive stance and front end really do it for me, and the sound of that V8 is breath taking. When I test drove it in, the salesman wouldn't take it past 5,000 (out of 8,400), but even then, it sounded better than anything I have ever heard. The seats were AMAZING, and it even has the thigh and torso bolsters. The steering wheel was thick and wrapped in extremely soft and pleasing leather. You really owe it to yourself to atleast drive it...

I agree...I told the salesman today that I absolutely wouldn't make a decision until I drove all three (although the C63 may be tough to find).

Who knows, maybe next week I'll be posting Stop me from buying an M3!

No worries. It would be lunacy to pony up before checking out the competition.

I've read that the C63 is selling very well (waiting list, etc) which would rule out a test drive in the near future and possibly any dickering at deal time. Lexus and BMW don't appear to be having the same problem.

For the 996TT crowd...no argument it decisively trumps any of my top three but I'm pretty sure a nice low mileage example would be considerably more expensive. I'll be at the limit of my comfort level at $60K.

I've driven this car extensively at the lexus track event, a few months ago. They are nice cars, however, I would buy a manual 335i, with navi, over the isF any day of the week. The isF is way too overpriced, and its reliablitly is yet to be seen. The 335i handles just as good, if not better. give the manual 335i a try, before making your decision. Both cars are gas guzzlers though.

IS-F is a nice car, but not worth $60k. I would rather get m3, 335i (use that rest of the money few mods), S4, etc etc.

You don't buy this type of car because of reliability.

If you are placing reliability as top priority, you should not be looking at this type of car.

Go drive the M3, RS4, and even the C63.

what the fake quad exhaust tips the is-f has?
for how much you're paying the for the car, the least they could do was actually make the tips connect.
heres another pic.
