Height is the main culprit in the case of an I4.
If I went that route, it'd be either an NB or NC Miata engine.

If you're thinking something other than a rotary, look into motorcycle I4s.

No, it's keeping the Dorito spinner, in one way or another.
Making a drivetrain switch would likely add significant cost & require some more substantial chassis adjustments.

Might start hunting for a 4-port MSP (birthday in Jan ) & see if I can source one sans transmission to maybe cut the cost a bit more; or if I can talk the local one into the engine only for a bit less $$.

Can you make some money by selling the trans?

Possibly, but have no idea what the market looks like for a AT RX8 trans.
Ideally, finding a 4-port manual (with or without trans) would be great. Most of the 4-port MSPs I've seen are autos.

Yeah, if I could find a 5spd 4-port MSP, I could possibly use that, or sell it & keep the 5MT I already have, which already has a shortened driveshaft.
Best case, I find a long-block MSP (even though I'll be pulling all accessories except the alternator) sans trans & run with that.

Also, from what I've read, I'll probably use the RX7 alternator, as the MSP uses a 'smart' alternator that can be finnicky.

Have you checked copart or any of the local yards for the longblock?

Not yet, would really like to find a running MSP.
Have looked on CL & eBay Motors & found a few listings.
We have a huge CoPart yard near my office.

My dad also has a good friend that runs a performance shop in Austin, so may see if he can source one for a good price.

What's the motor weight difference between the two rotaries?

Looks like a 13B S4 (early FC RX7) long block is about 300lbs
13B MSP (RX8) is around 270lbs

So, pretty negligible weight difference, with a fair bump in power.

^ great quote from Chapman, my opinion on motorcycles as well.

Some of his driver's had varied opinions.

... in '59 I ran out of brakes four times -- and I don't mean they didn't work very well, I mean I had none. Like the main oil line had sheared. You know, so that oil, you know, when you put your foot on the floor, the oil just went squirting out into the atmosphere. I'd always believed that Colin was close to genius in his design ability and everything, if he could just get over this failing of his of making things too bloody light. I mean, Colin's idea of a Grand Prix car was it should win the race and, as it crossed the finishing line, it should collapse in a heap of bits. If it didn't do that, it was built too strongly.

^ to both.
No AWD on this brap-ster.
Though, the eventual Malibu replacement will likely be 4WD/AWD

I've had 3.
Next up will likely be something either US/Japan based, but it changes from month to month.

Right now: SWB WL GC, 4Runner or Maverick, but who knows once we're ready & I can get a few on the road.
Helps that my neighbor works for the local Ford dealer where I bought my F150. Makes buying there a bit more appealing.

Possibly
It'll be likely at least a year before we even start looking, so I've got time to flip-flop around on it.

Listed the short block for sale on CL. Already got 1 hit, 50/50 if it's a bot. Coherent text & grammar, but sounds like the ad wasn't even read.
Proceeds will go toward a running Renesis.

Have a potential buyer lined up for the short block.
Would cover about 30-40% of a Renesis.

Out of the 5-6 emails I've gotten on it, this one didn't scream scam from the start.

Above buyer still a potential, but he's located in Florida & wants to get a freight quote, and I just haven't had time to weigh it, nor do I have a crate to put it in.

Have a local buyer coming by my office tomorrow to look at it
If he takes the whole pkg (short block, dry sump pump & tank) I'll almost recoup about 80% of my investment in the project so far.

And, listed the Rotus today.
The new house has no garage & just a small shed in the back. Big enough to store it as is, but not enough room to work on it, and it wouldn't be able to drive out (door too narrow, guest house too close).
Best case 1.5-2 years before I can get a small shop built, and that's after we get a pool put in.

Possible replacements:
ND2 Miata
Another Lotus/Caterham (maybe a real one in kit form & build at home)
Another motorcycle (have had a line on an older BMW R65 [full restoration project] for a while, but it's in the Orlando area, but we're going to be in Pensacola in July ). Otherwise, either buy my father-in-law's Indian, or a newer Triumph Speed Twin.

Might have a buyer lined up, he's working on logistics of getting it from Houston > Minnesota

Thought I'd found the NB Miata I'd want last week, only 48k miles $9k & in great shape, looking through photos & saw the abomination that is the AT shifter
Relatively rare trim, just unacceptable with an auto.

Sorry to hear you're abandoning the project but a livable workspace for something like that is crucial.

Smart decision - you will have an absolute blast in a Miata.

Good luck man.

We'll see what happens.
Have only had 1 interested party so far, and last I'd heard he was trying to figure out getting it from Houston to Minnesota ( not @SamDoe1 )
Just emailed him again, as I'm planning on working on packing a lot of the garage this weekend & don't want to bury the chassis in boxes if he's going to show up before we move.

Also need to get a couple huge Dell server boxes from the office to the house. Might be big enough to fit the 3 assembled corners of suspension.

If it sells, plan is to get moved & settled, then keep an eye out for a super clean NB2 [ideally a Shinsen NB, but I've only found 2 online & they were both autos ] or a decent deal on an ND2 Miata, unless I can convince the wife to greenlight another bike.
At least it'll have a roof & can be parked in the driveway until I get a shop/garage built.

Well, she's sold, pending funds.
Partially re-assembled to near-roller status, to simplify transport.
Trans, diff & 3 corners of suspension reinstalled.

Found a 5MT Shinsen over the weekend, but it's $14k & in NJ. Too high & too far (but would travel & drive back if the price were right).
Might run down the lead I have on an early 80s BMW bike, needs a full teardown & restore as it's been parked for >20 years. If I can work out getting it from Orlando>Houston for reasonable, might try to pick it up.

And, she's all packed up.
Still waiting to hear back from the potential buyer on transport, an no funds have changed hands yet.
Genuinely surprised I was able to get all of it contained on the chassis.

Cngrats on selling it, as for the BMW, K or R? I knew a couple R75 and R100 owners, they don't get the respect they deserve.

Sale is pending, haven't heard back from the buyer about him nailing down transport. Next step is exchanging funds.

The BMW maybe is a 1980 R65, trouble is, at the moment it would cost more to ship it to Houston than to buy the bike
Same guy had a 93 K75S that I'd tried to buy for a while, but timing & funding never aligned. He's since sold it & it was in running order. The R needs a full teardown.

On to new things. Still waiting to see if the BMW is still sitting in the owner's garage. If so, it's figuring out how to get it from N Orlando to Houston & a new project begins.
Probably still keep an eye out for a 4-wheeled toy, but it'll have to be something that can be parked outside.

Payment received, so she's sold.
Shipper expected between 10-3 today

I'm at the old house, we had to have it cleaned as part of the contract, so I'm working on a hotspot while they clean the house & just packing up the remainder of the garage.
