So whats the story with Daewoo?

I totally forgot about Daewoo, do they still sell them in the US, or are they off the map?

Weren't they absorbed into GM and their dealer network eliminated?

And isn't the Chevy Aveo really just a warmed over Daewoo?

GM bought out selected assets of Daewoo. In the US, the Chevrolet Aveo, Suzuki Reno, Suzuki Forenza, and Suzuki Verona are actually Daewoo models. The Forenza and Verona are sold in Canada as the Chevrolet Optra and Epica models. Chevolet is hoping that the Daewoo cars can help them sell more in Europe as well.

Some dude in my apt. complex has a tiny hatchback. Reminds me of the tiny european cars. That thing can fit into most spots mine can't.

I thought that GM was primarily interested in the Daewoo design center in China (outsourcing is where it's at)...

Daewoo (the brand) in the US is gone. You won't find a dealership. But as mentioned, its cars are still being sold, under different badges.

I was in Vietnam last year, around the same time, and saw a Daewoo dealership there. So I'm assuming that the Daewoo brand is still viable in most Asian countries.

I believe that the Daewoo brand is still being sold in both southeast Asia and eastern Europe. However, like I said, GM has said that they want to sell the Chevrolet "American Revolution" in Europe ... by rebadging Daewoos. So, that may have already changed.

Daewoo= shit box that gets great gas mileage. a guy a work with has a while Daewoo marshmellow/egg shaped car and it is funny as hell looking. I have no idea why he bought it. you don't see any of them on the road anymore.

Ok, here is the Story of Daewoo.

Like many Korean companies, Daewoo is a conglomerate that covers many industries. In the late 90s, the company want to re-enter the American market (previously Daewoo lived shortly as a Pontiac LeMans in late 80s). In addition to traditional dealerships, Daewoo wants to enter the market by recruiting college students to sell their cars, Avon lady style (the college students recommend the cars to friends and if they buy one the kid gets a commission of sorts).

However, this did not come out as planned. The sales plan was frankly, nuts, and some students sued the comapny when they lost money out of the deal. In 1999, due to huge debts and some questionable accounting (Enron, anyone?) the group collapsed. Their CEO fled and disappeared while the whole group virtually fell like a house of cards. GM picked up the auto parts of the group in 2001 and it became GM Daewoo. Until recently, GM continued to market Daewoo as Daewoo in Europe, but they have changed to brand the cars Chevolets so that they can introduce the Chevy brand to Europeans as a bargain brand. In the US, many Suzuki cars are actually re-badged Daewoos.
