Fire in Engine of 06Z06
I took my 02Z into Koons Chevrolet, Tysons Corner, VA yesterday to repair some damaged paint (a large van did not see me and turned into me scraping the paint) and saw a black 06Z parked near the service bay with a repair tag on it. I know the service rep for Corvettes there fairly well and asked him what was wrong with it. He advised the engine had caught fire and the fire had started to melt the intake manifold. He said the owner of the Z was pulling into his driveway when the engine started missing and running very rough. He saw the smoke and put out the fire, but there was a fair amount of damage under the hood. The Koons service rep said they did not know what started the fire and had been told by GM to just park it until one of their service specialists arrived to look at it and decide what to do, i.e., replace the entire engine, the car, etc.
I had seen this Z in the Koons showroom previously and am aware it was sold for $13,000 over MSRP. The person who bought it traded in an 02Z. I can imagine he is not very happy right now!

C6 Z06 Rotors faugh-pa
FYI: There are (currently) NO right hand OEM C6 Z06 rotors
ALL C6 Z06 rotors are left handed. Those mounted on the right have a "LEFT" stamped indicator.
Therefore, those installed on the right have the cooling vanes reversed.
Not really a signiificant issue for street cars; but may cause reduced cooling (at least on the right) on tracked cars.
The 2 available Part #'s are for left hand rotors only F/R, so you can not even order right hand rotors, if any really exsist.
Aftermarket should have a solution soon.
However, tracked stock classes may be screwed.

The dealer told me when we picked up the new Z that you had to park/shut off the car with the gear shift in reverse...otherwise the computer does not turn off properly and it maintains a draw on the battery...which will cause the battery to drain if not started for a day. Is that true? And why would they do that?
Anyone had this problem?
My 750 mi Z developed a miss this evening and then a flashing check engine light. Oil pressure was good so I drove it home. Had a smell of what appeared to be unburned fuel (probably from the miss). I guess I get the prize for the first Z06 returned to the dealer for repair.
Any one have any ideas? I really don't want to send this back to the chev dealer if I don't need to.

This is my first post here and I want to say I love my new ZO6. Unfortunately though it's down for the count right now. The electrical system is acting up and i'm stuck. Nothing is working the way it should, windows don't roll back up when closing the door, light's stay on, Valentine always has power, the Battery is reading 14 volts, service engine soon light is on, also says check antilock brake system or something along those lines. When I go to start it everything goes off and nothing happens. The doors don't unlock, I have to go in through the trunk. I tried disconnecting the battery and a whole different set of ridiculous things started happening. Any ideas before I have my baby towed to the dealer??
Hopefully I'm just missing something obvious here.

You might want to check who made your engine..
I popped the cover to check the name of the engine builder - found a wad of tape the size of a golf ball between the cover and the engine. I'm not sure if this would have caused any issues but it certainly would not have helped.

^^ well at least they're not lying when they say each engine is hand-built!! I mean, you can rest assured that some actual human being actually fiddled with and/or built your engine some kind of dark comfort, I suppose... ?

That was uncalled for...
Id rather have my engine built on a assembley line then have a small golf ball sized ball of tape somewhere in the engine...

First the Ford GT had serious problems when it first came out, now problems with the Z06.
And by the way, I'll hold off on buying one, don't worry.

To save you some time.
The other TSB's are for a rear main seal leak and a small rattle in the steering column and some other fixes for leaks if they occur.
No "serious problems" ever occured.

for a car of this high profile and caliber, this many SERIOUS problems is embarrassing. I mean with the amount of R&D that went into this car? where did it all go?

Seriously, there's a reason why people say they you should never buy the first year of a new model.

Also, the brake issue may be completely moot. I'd be very interested in seeing some temperature datas, but I have a big feeling everyone is getting twisted over a non issue. GM did a lot of testing on this car. They wouldn't cheap on a safety feature like this IMO if it would cause a problem.
Also, the leaving the car in gear thing isn't true w/ the new Z06 but has been true w/ past vettes from what i've been reading. No biggie.
a quote from the thread you posted you must of forgotten to look at:
I was told at the factory that you do NOT have to put the Z06 in reverse, it will not drain the battery in another gear.
Of course, I'm not gonna test out the theory either...I've always put every car I had that was a stickshift in reverse when I parked it.

And lastly, new model, first year production, there isn't a car out there that doesn't have numerous TSB's, problems, etc it's first year of production
With all of this on the table, you guys are still talking about a VERY VERY small percentage of cars having problems. Nothing out of the normal at all. Hell if you had read these forums 2-3 years ago you'd think the CL and TL were the biggest problematic cars made. When it simply wasn't the case. You hear about the 10 people who have things go wrong, and never hear about the 1,000's that never have a problem

no, it just means the guy doesn't know where the auxillary back up to open the doors when the battery dies is
I knew those doors were gonna be a problem from the start, after having touchless entry on a few cars we've done it can be NOTHING BUT A HEADACHE, esp. when a battery dies But, that's why you have an aux backup, which the vette has, unfortunately this guy must not of been reading his manual so he had to climb through his trunk.

wasn't there a video of a kid that took his dads ZO6 to the track and it burned to the ground on the starting line? wasn't an 2006 but i believe it was new and unmodified.
but i guess it could happen to any car brand new.

I don’t care what you say. I still wouldn’t kick it out of my garage even if it WAS on fire.
My local Chevy dealer got a Blue one in today. I’m going to check it out tomorrow.

very valid points CLpower..... it's easy to forget how small a world the intarnet makes... even a few years ago, most of the people buying these cars probably had no idea sites such as Z06vette and corvetteforum etc. even exist... it's time for me to call Chevy back and apologize about bitching and cancelling my order loll
also great point about the aux power when the battery dies, there are n00bs in all circles...
ps. i believe the older Z06 that caught fire at the dragstrip had NAWS and it was used incorrectly..

re: aux power
i was doing work for an X-philly flyer, and he had a brand new porsche, that the battery died. had to "jump start" the lock on the door and the fuse box(actually had a terminal in the fuse box!) to get to the hood so you could jump start the battery. All the instructions were in german, woulry it! would have never figured it out without a diagram. they looked at me like i had a triangle head for suggesting to try it

nope
It turns out a main fuse blew in the engine compartment panel. A 30 amp fuse to be exact. I even checked a few fuses in that area but I missed that one. I would like to take a picture of the location but my camera is out of commission right now. Hopefully I can get one up in a few days.
The CL and TL DO have major design/manufactuing flaws. (wink wink transmission)

So I was reading the ages of the Z06 owners. Some are 18!!!
LOL, this post however caught my funnybone.
I have been 21 for very long time now. Because at 21 you can drink so there is no point in getting any older. In 3 years my daughter will turn 21 and we can then drink together, when I'm not in the Z generating huge smiles as I go down the road.
I guess when he turns 25 and realizes his insurance drops he might change his mind... ROFL.... (which I'm sure already happened, but he's stuck on the 21 thing)
and then I found this post in the thread.
I bought my first Z06 at 21, and Viper at 22. No, I'm not in debt, I paid cash. I've been working in the software industry for some time, and I have done well. I don't see what is so hard to understand
So much BS in that thread it's not even funny...
Someone responded with ...

The viper I can understand. It's a 98 probably going for about 36-38k you still live at home, with no bills, you can "afford" it.
So unless you were saving up for a viper at the age of three, I don't think you paid "cash"

"hahahahahahahahaha" zip it. I was actually designing software since I was 19, while I was a student, and FYI, you can get more than "$18 bucks an hour" doing that.
I see you mentioned something about "answering phones". Is that what you do? I guess if I were doing that, It would probably take me twenty years to have the money for a '98 viper
I personally know a lot of the people on this forum, and they are really cool guys. I used to have a Corvette, and get along with most Corvette owners really well. I don't see why I'm getting all of the jealousy and hostility from you for being successful.
