So I did it... got me a FORD!
Add 1 more redneck point to my name... I went and got a Ford.
Found a '97 Explorer XLT (a mid-trim level) with 4wd (auto, high, low) and a 5-speed for a mere 1300. Couldn't resist the whole package. It's got its issues, but I've got a majority of them fixed so far with a total investment of about $100 in parts and services.

So, anyone else in here riding the Exploder camp? I already found its native forums and made the rounds, but I'm wondering where to take this thing in the future. Mud crawler or lowrider? heh. I need the economy to come around so I can justify spending some money on cars again.
1 thing I like about it so far: everything is CHEAP. I haven't found an OEM part for it that costs more than $70 on ebay. Door handles replaced: $17. Heater door replaced: $11. Even got a new (updated) cluster since the backlighting on this one is out: $65. Lift shackles: $65.
Going to add about 2" to it to start, and get some proper 31" AT tires. It came with crappy passenger car tires on it, ugh. Anyway, that's my report to finish up the thread. Thanks for all that chimed in and gave helpful advice or even just a little commentary to the process!
