So the Challenger needed an oil change last Saturday...

Oliver!!!
David, glad you and the kids made it out okay. Its not a great situation, but it could've been so much worse. It stinks that the Challenger is totaled, but I'm sure you'll move on. I've heard great things about USAA. I've had them for 19 of the last 20 years, but never really had any major dealings with them. Best of luck, and I hope there's no lasting effects on you or the boys.

Sadly, I have had to use them over the that time. And yes they are pretty good.

Safety Car
Working like big guys on Dad’s real life Hot Wheels car.
Grandpa’s garage. Car way up there. Deep tread. Pipes and wires.
The compressor hammers. A whiff of coolant. That’s the exhaust. Hold these pliers.
Torque is what matters. It’s all in the arm. You’ll know when it’s right.
See how it’s dirty black. Now let’s ease her down. That should be tight.
Take care of her. She’ll take care of you. Strap in. Rolling the main line.
Oh! Big flash of white. Dad what was that! Yeah, I’m fine.
She’s broken and crying. I know that smell now. Coolant and steam.
Up on the truck. She’s rolling away. End of the dream.
Some day when Dad’s old. I’ll strap my own kids in the back.
We’ll rap the pipes in Dad’s driveway. In a Plum Crazy Sarlacc.

I drove a 91 Jeep Cherokee for a few months. One of the worst cars I've ever driven for a daily commute. If the GC is anything like the one I drove, I'm sure the Mrs' will forget that she was ever mad at you once she gets behind the wheel of the new ride. Heck, you might have a tough time getting the keys back if it's the ride I'm thinking of. Best of luck with getting full reimbursement.. and might I add.. I can't believe the boys are so big!
But its getting long in the tooth. Little things failing like door or window actuators or U Joint/bearings needing to be redone.
It really is a great beater, has been for the last 4 years. But now the wife doesn't feel safe when she has to drive it, and I have always refused to put the kids in it. So, its time to let it go.

Hope the whole "at fault" situation gets worked out.
The same thing happened when I had my Mazdaspeed3.. Some lady in a brand new Tahoe turned into me and we had an offset head on collision.. and her claims adjuster ( Western General ) said that based on the damage to my car and that the type of car that I have, that I would've HAD to be speeding.
This was all after the lady admitted fault, the police said she admitted fault, and there was a witness that saw the whole thing. And State Farm did nothing for me.

wow was not expecting this turn of events at all..... I thought it was going to be photos of your kids and their grandpa at the oil change.
sorry to hear man and so glad the car kept your family safe. what a victory.
looking at the pictures of the car, it reminds me of an ending scene from a movie where some channel of getting somewhere - a chariot, a spacecraft, an enabler - makes a sacrifice so travelers reach their destination safely.
I see you in a GC SRT. (or TrackHawk )

Wow!!.Thankfully, the car kept its most precious cargo safe.
It's tough to lose something that you put a lot of time and effort to take care of,at the end of the day though, everyone is safe and that is the best outcome from this situation.Hopefully your insurance takes good care of you.

Glad to see the car did it's job and you and the kids walked away.
Question. I see you aren't 100% sure on your next vehicle. Are you looking to mod it as you did the challenger or something to "leave stock"?

Being that this is Acurazine, I'll recommend a brand new TLX 4cyl base FWD.
It's that kind of thrill. TM

Now I'm on denial that this even happened!
WHYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYY?
Next up: sadness and then maybe acceptance.
David - how are the boys handling the crash and everything that happened? I would think at their age, unless their like their father, they would be a little traumatized by the whole experience.
Hell, when I totaled my Accord in April of 2012, my son was in the car behind me and saw everything that happened. He was very scared of cars for about two weeks. It was only after I talked with him and told him that the car did it's job in protecting me that did he want to go back into a car. Maybe your boys are stronger than my son, but you still may want to talk with them about what happened.

Gatr.
The kids are fine. They have been really good. They ask questions from time to time (mostly Solomon, cause the kid is an old man in a young mans body) And I talk to them about it. No real trauma to show off.
They asked questions a lot the first two days, and we would talk about it. I think the open dialogue helped a lot.

Oliver!!!
I've had USAA for about 19 years as well...started with them for car insurance at 16. Currently have them for savings, checkings, home owners, car, credit, IRA...etc...they are pretty great.
Sadly, I have had to use them over the that time. And yes they are pretty good.
Their appraisal is the fair number I was expecting...actually a little better. And I still have to send them all my receipts for my mods, which they requested. So, hopefully I'll get a little more.

Biggest thing for kids is their reaction right after and making sure you talk to them through the stress, which is very important when dealing with shock. I think the challenger holding up, and no major injuries, really kept it from being a stressful / traumatic event for them. I'm more surprised how David kept his cool. I think I would have kicked that guy's ass.

Now, if the other guy had been a dick...different story. But he was clearly in the wrong and was pretty somber. No need to make him feel more like shit. He shook my hand and thanked me before he left...thanked me for not being an asshole.
