They're not saying that the 7AT is a bad transmission, just that it doesn't suit the nature of the car at all. If you need an automatic for commuting reasons, frankly, you're looking at the wrong car.

Doesn't look like dealers are getting trunk money just yet but at $38k they've gone into their holdback. Invoice on that car is right around $40k.
Unless you feel like you're going to be able to find that exact car three months from now, I say do what makes you happy.

Well Nissan made the AT vs MT argument more difficult with the 370Z in that the AT is faster (from what I understand anyway). If the OP is in NYC proper then there's even MORE reason for an AT. (Nothing more miserable than an MT while stuck in Holland Tunnel traffic on Varick Street during rush hour.)
But , the essence of a sports car is a FULLY manual tranny.

I hate ferrari for deciding that because their auto can shift faster than a human, they shouldn't even offer a manual! Not everyone drives around a track racing against lambos!

I considered a manual trans, but it is not that important to me. Considering this would be a sunny weather treat, my intent is for the car to only get wet when I wash it. I understand that an auto is not a purist approach, but I don't need it to enjoy the car. I am also looking at a 2011 Porsche Cayman S with the PDK trans, with lots of extras. It is about $72,000 which is much more expensive than the Z, but there is nothing like a Porsche. What I am trying to figure out is if the Z is a close substitute and is about 50% of the price. I'm on the fence. I can easily afford the Porsche, but the value mizer in me is speaking loudly.

If you get a nicely equipped Z Touring, you'll take some comfort that you have a very nice and capable Z. Not to mention having the additional $30k+ available for other use.
On the P-Car side, you'll have a Porsche: A car specifically designed from the ground up to provide the ultimate motoring pleasure for its driver.
That said, throw another $20k into the pot and get a Nissan GT-R.

Porsche purists would likely take offense to that inference.

Sorry for the dumb Q on the CPO. Thanks for the info.
I drove an 11 CTSv sedan and it felt too much like the old GM quality control issues. I prefer Jap or German quality. I considered an R8, but it seemed like too much $ for the car. I can justify the Z easily and make a case for the Cayman S at about 50% more, but a GTR would be the limit. The GTR would be an animal by any measure of reason, but it is a lot for a Nissan no matter how good it is. For that money I would rather get a Porsche.

Get the Cayman S. It's in your budget. Get a true drivers car and satisfy your needs for quality and prestige.

The Z is a remarkable car even when compared to the Porsche which is a real compliment to Nissan.

2011+ Mercedes SLK? Only comes in auto trans.
BTW, IDK about the 370Z's cargo space, but the Cayman has very little storage space behind the seats or in the 2 tiny front and rear "trunks."

This is the thing I dont get, do people realize that opting for an auto to be 0.3 seconds faster to 60 is useless unelss you are competitively racing around a track. A manual is more engaging and fun.

I don't give a rats ass how much faster an Auto shifts compared to a manual. I don't race on a track, I don't time my trips from work to home in tenths of a second. I do care about how fun a car is to drive and weigh that to be more important if it's a sport car. Manual shifting is where it's at when it comes to enjoying any sports car regardless of any tenths of a second increase in shifting. It takes more skill, knowledge and appreciation to be able to drive a manual. Something auto manufacturers are willing to give up just to play the numbers game which leads me to believe that they really don't care about what it means for enthusiasts who enjoy cruising around in their cars.

I don't see why someone can't enjoy an auto sports car as much as someone else would enjoy a manual sports car. It's personal preference. As long as they're happy, it doesn't matter that someone else doesn't understand or wouldn't be happy in the same situation.

If they continue to offer both I wouldn't have as much of a gripe, but manual transmissions seem to have been on the decline, esp in the states. This doesn't seem to be that much of an issue in Europe I think where even a grandmother doesn't mind driving a manual.
Honestly, I think most American's are just lazy and opt for the auto. IMHO it takes a lot more discipline and patience to drive a manual. That may sound elitist in a way, but with more american's wishing to watch tv, be on the telephone, or doing god knows what while they drive, i'm not surprised that manual transmissions are on the decline in the states.
