Should I be concerned about buying a car w/JDM motor?

I am looking at a civic with a swapped jdm b16. Should I consider a jdm engine or are there too many risks involved? This is a second car in addition to my tl. The car has an inspection sticker through Feb or Mar 2013. I guess my main concern is that I want it to be street legal and I don't want to have to take it to a "special" place to have it inspected. I am in Texas (I'm sure it varies by state). Thanks.

I've owned two cars with JDM engines (both integras). First one I bought I didn't do the swap. It was ok but there was a lot of corners cut. Second time around I did it and it make the entire experience much better.

Smog issue...can't really help you there. I worked at a shop and was able to make the mods necessary to pass smog. Good luck.

True...but most have d motors and integras seem tougher to find

Good point. As mentioned above they are a dime a dozen. I could pick up a d series and have the swap done so I have a better idea what is happening.

OP, its a honda regardless if its swapped or not 9 out of 10 times its been ragg'd on... its just the nature of it unfortunately.

Just make sure its well maintained, doesnt burn oil, leaks, open valve cover if possible to see how well it has been taken care of, etc...

I think my point was that it isn't anything exclusive so if you're going to make the jump into a JDM motor might as well do it yourself (or at least have a shop do it for you). That way you can find a car that is in the condition you like and a motor that isn't beaten. Often those don't come in the same package.

OK...considering this is a second car for me but I want it to be relatively daily driveable, and that I will be swapping to a b series motor, which seems like the best choice:
A 98 civic ex sedan, clean in and out, 150,000 miles, $4400
A 98 civic lx sedan, clean in and out, 110,000 miles, $4,000
A 94 civic dx coupe, passable in and out but could use new paint, 250,000 miles,$2,000
All have manual trans, ac, and the dx is the only one w/o power locks/doors, etc. And also the only one w/ aftermarket stereo and wheels (not the wheels I would keep). I guess I prefer the coupe body style a bit and that is why I included it. Any thoughts would be helpful.

Perhaps you are right. I suspect part of that is that these are all at dealers...kind of burned out dealing with private sellers. I think I'll shelve this project for a while and do some more reading/research. Thanks all for the info.

I sold my 1998 Civic Coupe HX with Function & Form Type 1 coilovers, Honda Fit HFP Wheels, Function 7 LCA's, complete EM1 interior, EDM Clock, Viper 2-way Alarm, 115k & more things that I'm forgetting for $2500. There's no way in hell I'd pay more than that for a stock Civic.
