Shoofin's Lotus Exige S Thread [Update - P.11]
Went on a cruise last month, as I'm leaving the port, I get a text from a buddy of mine, telling me his partner's friend had a car for sale, and the first person he thought of was me. Sent me some pics, and I got all crazy, called him immediately. I told him not to do anything with the car until I come back. Get back, went to look at the car, and pretty much committed to it on the spot! The price was too good to pass up...It's a 2007 Exige in Graphite Grey with 6,500 miles on it. Now I don't know what to do with and Elise AND an Exige. I love the color of my Elise, but I've always wanted an Exige. Me thinks I'm going to sell my Elise and keep this. It has a few small flaws, but is otherwise in great shape. I haven't picked her up yet, it's still at my friend's shop, figured to just have him repair the flaws before I get it. I also didn't pay it in full yet, just sent the payoff check to the bank, and once I get the title, will pay the seller the balance and pick up the car...

The values of the Elise/Exige have both started to go up since they discontinued them. I'm not 100% sure how much it's worth, but I would guess that I could get back the money I spent, if not even make a couple of pesos. I always browse the web for Lotus cars for sale to keep track of prices, and most of what I find that people are selling are 05-06, I don't know why, but you don't see many '07's (What mine is) or even newer very often.

Now here's the thing...I have a buddy of mine, also has an Elise, but an '08 Supercharged in white. When he was shopping for a car, he really had his mind set on an Exige - in Graphite Grey. Something I didn't know. When I told him that I found one and was buying it, he nearly wet his pants. He offered to trade cars with me, this '07 Exige with 6,500 mile for his '08 Elise S/C with about 12-13k miles.
Thing is, when I was first hunting for a Lotus, I really wanted an Exige. But when I saw that the pricing was on average $10k more than a similar year Elise, figured I'll settle with an Elise and eventually supercharge it. I grew to like the Elise more, mostly because I like to open the top every so often, and I like the fact that you can see behind you in the rear view mirror. The Exige has a rear window, it even has a rear view mirror, but all you're looking at is the back of the intercooler. You can remove the top of the Exige, but I don't know if it hampers the cooling through the duct on the roof to the intercooler.
I thought about swapping with him (his car has most of the mods that I want to do), but his car is white. It does look good in white, but it's a little blah for my tastes. I would want to probably add some color to it, perhaps a racing stripe down the middle or offset. I would even do it to the Exige possibly. Was thinking the Burnt Orange color, similar to the color I did on my Mini, but not sure yet.
FWIW, this is his car:
At first I was leaning towards swapping with him, but the more I think about it, I feel like I should keep the Exige. I like the fact that his car is already modded, and that it's an '08, which did bring a host of improvements/upgrades. But I don't know!

Oh the tough decisions you have to make!
Isnt your elise a special edition of some sort?
One of my friends had a supercharged Elise....oh lord that thing was amazing.

Also, the more I look at the Graphite Grey color of the Exige, the more I like it too. Still like Yellow better though. However it seems like the GG is also a little rare. Most are Storm Titanium, which is more of a dark silver color.

idk...the trade isnt a horrible idea. youd essentially be getting a "finders fee" for the exige, which would ultimately result in an upgrade from your elise for an S/C version without coming out of pocket.
the open air S/C elise version would meet all of your criteria - speed, open air, mods. if you were to keep the exige, you would be sacrificing a couple items on your checklist (rear vision/open-air), although there is more upside for future mods/personalization. taking that guys elise would pretty much be the end-game.
from what ive seen on lotus boards, there is much more respect for the exige over the elise. (elise being called the "girl car" of the line-up). as you mentioned though, the elise is more user friendly, and a more fun experience... i think it really boils down to how big of a lotus fan you are, or at least how involved you are in the lotus community.
i say, if you could turn a decent profit off your elise, then keep the exige and do a wrap, etc. step up the game.

The Exige can have the soft top installed with little modification, which I would probably do. As for the rear visibility, it's definitely good to have, and I would probably look into a rear view camera system that stays on all the time, with the screen in the rear view mirror, so I can at least see SOMETHING behind me. I mean with the Elise, with my S/C style lip/wing, it already cuts visibility, and with the Exige style wing my friend has installed, it also cuts visibility a bit. Though you can still see a little bit back there.

I would sell my Elise with the stock wheels, and then I have the 2 sets of wheels, the ones I had PC'ed gloss black, and the track wheels. I'll probably sell one of those sets, so I have 2 sets for the next car, one for the street, one for the track.
