If money is a concern I might think three or four times b4 going VW. Email me and I'll get together Consumer Report info for you, I subscribe to the paper version.
I did not have good luck with our large VW/Audi dealer.

question for you guys with VW experience..say if i just wanted to drive the car (the 2006 in the link) and not do any mods, and maintain it at the dealer, would it be a safe bet, or should i still avoid it and get an 08?

^^ The only main issue about the FSI engine...if you do NOT mod it is the cam follower.
If you maintain it properly...ie use the right VW/Audi approved German oil you shouldn't have any issues....I've read of people having +80k miles and only minor cam follower wear.
FYI if you have to change it out it's only about a $60 part, and there are several DIY's around....if you are slightly mechanically inclined, you can do it yourself....it's not that big of a deal.
Keep in mind however that you are buying a "first year" model....any first year vehicle from any car maker is prone to having more issues.
How many miles are on the '06?
...oh and keep in mind that not all of the 2008 MkV are TSI engines.....you will need to pop the hood and check.....pretty simple...if it says in big letters TSI on the engine cover...you know it's a TSI....and visa-versa.

Nothing compares the the torque and turbo feel when you are putting it up against a civic or TSX.
IMHO the TSX and Civic si are a bit boring compared to the GTi.....the Gti is more of a drivers car....it's more refined too. I'd get the '06...sure it may have some issues...but they are minor....replacing a cam follower is not a big deal.
...but it all depends on what you want.

My ownership costs have been pretty inexpensive.
Service for a VW can tend to be a little more expensive than the Honda, Toyota, Nissan services....but it depends on your dealer.
Parts are not too outrageous in price.
Call your local VW dealer for service prices.....basically every 10k miles it's due for "service"....keep in mind they vary...some are as simple as an oil change, while others are more involved.
There are plenty of VW owners on this board, and I don't recall hearing them complain about cost of ownership prices.
Keep in mind it is a turbo...so you gotta be dilligent about the oil changes / oil level.

the 2006 VW GTI repair record is worse than average, trouble spots being: minor engine/fuel system/climate system/body integrity;
the 2006 TSX repair record is much better than average;
the 2006 Civic repair record is much better than average with trouble spot being the suspension.
If you have new rent and etc expenses, why don't you just keep the TL since it's almost paid up?
Instead of starting a new car loan, you can save the payment for a rainy day which is especially good idea in this economy.

If parts are needed, autohausaz.com is a very good friend. They have a lot of parts and killer prices on parts for all types of euro cars. I'm sure Moog knows of a few others.

You have been advised multiple times.
G/L and really hope it works out.
It's been years but the fun of driving experience was not offset by the pita unreliability for me. But they are fun to drive.
Everybody should be dealing on everything right now fyi.

see, consumer reports kinda bashes it, but the reviews on edmunds are 80% positive.
ownership costs for an acura were below average while ownership costs on a vw were above average
so idk. as long as the car is serviced regularly and driven well, i dont think ill have any problems
its just the GTI seems more applealing to civic Si to me at this point

I went through the same thing you are going through over 4 years ago. I narrowed my choices down to a Jetta 2.0T/GLI and a TSX. If you look deeper into consumer reports and check out the actual owner reviews you will see that there is actually a higher percentage of people happier with the VW over the TSX.....lets just say i cancelled my subscription to CR after my purchase as their assesments seemed very bias IMO.
The TSX and Si are very good cars but after driving the VW it was no comparison IMO and the fun to drive was incredible, especially for what you get. As others have mentioned you seem to get more for your money and the materials in the VW seem so much better especially compared to the Civic.
"Moog" has hit everything dead on about the car and the reliability has been no different than any other Asian car i have owned. Mine is obviously the FSI engine and i keep it well maintained and have had no real issues with it.
All three choices are nice vehicles but as others have stated now that you have driven them you see what people mean when they talk about the fun to drive factor with VW's.

a lot more bang for you buck..
with either the MS3 or GTi just do as Moog suggested & make sure you stay on top of the maintenance with regular oil changes & premium fluids & filters.. you also might want to test drive the volvo c30.. definitely a competitor in that field.
