Saleen Cobra - TOTALED

It was 9 PM and my son and I were heading home. We came to stop light and we both heard a really nice sounding car and saw that it was a Mustang. I changed lanes and was right behind him. We nnoticed that it was not just a Mustang but a Saleen Cobra S-281 with rear tires that looked like miniature steam rollers. The light turned green and he took off but not very fast as the road was wet. He then shifted to second and decided to hotrod it a bit and hit the throttle. The rear end went out at that point and went right and he turned in the same direction then the rear went left and he turned left......that's when the unbelievable happened. The car then headed to oncoming traffic and hit an escort station wagon. I couldn't believe what I was seeing....I was stunned. MY son and I were just commenting at how beautiful the car was. Apparently Ford made just a little over 5000 Cobras that year and only 185 of those were Saleen registered - with the "Saleen " signature . The father showed up at the seen and told me this was a collectors car and his son only had it a week. I would guess the damage at close to 18K to 20K on the car. The driver was only about 20 years old. I'm glad that my son(16 who just got his permit) and I both saw this as it was a solemn reminder that speed can hurt/kill. As soon as I can afford it we are both off to "Skip Barber" for some defensive and recovery driving techniques.
Unfortunately the driver of the Escort had to be taken to the hospital.
(BTW I was driving my moms Geo prizm)

damn that is shitty. Too much speed and not enough skills = bad combo.

Sounds like the driver tried to power his way out of it... Probably should have just put both feet in (depress clutch and brake), and ride it out...

Lots of power, wet pavement, and a young driver who likes to hotrod is usually a bad combination...

I'm glad too, my car would of been too tempting with that car. I'm very glad that I wasn't able to keep up with it in my 116 HP Geo!!!

Had he just continued to drive normal on the wet road all this could have been avoided.

I thought the S281-SC'd was a brand new engine, so it wouldn't be a converted cobra

Cause I see those things EVERYWHERE, but maybe that's cause saleen is out here

I got to drive an S281-E about 2 years back

Yes, the 281 is a brand new engine. Saleen is right down the street.

Had a buddy in high school who had a S281 a few years back, he got rid of it once he left for the Army. Oh so nice....

There's no such thing as a Saleen "Cobra". Only the SVT makes the Cobra.

All Saleens Mustangs start out as V6 base models, then they are completely ripped apart and rebuilt/upgraded.

The S281 only has like 35 horsepower extra compared to a GT. The S281E is the supercharged version. If it didn't say S281E, then it's really not that fast.

I hate those people.

I have a rich friend whose father worked for NBC. When he turned 15, a year before he had his license he had a 97 Maxima fully loaded. A year later he got his license and traded it in for a 2 door tahoe. About 6 months after that he ordered an Integra Type R. The funny part was his father bought him a white GSR until the R came. About 2 months after he got the type r he crashed it and got a Volvo C70. He drove that for a little over a year. Then as a side car he got a blazer extreme. A month after he got the blazer, he sold the volvo and got a CLS-6. A few moths after he got it he downshifted from 5th to 2nd on the highway and boom, bye bye cl. Now he has a G35 coupe. Mind you, every last car he had had mods on them. Even cars that he didnt keep for long had mods. Every car had at least rims, nitrous, exhaust and a system. Both trucks were supercharged and the volvo had tons of work imported. It was one of few c70's running 12's in the northeast. Its sad, but he never respected any of the cars and beat flames out of them till they got fucked up. On a side note he also has the chance to drive his father's head/cam z06, 03 M3, new 6 Series or the daily beaters the Jag or the X5 4.6. Sorry for the rant.
