You need a code scanner of some sort, but make sure you check and see what the code is before you just reset it, chances are it will stay off after the reset. But just in case it comes back on it would be good to know what was there before to help fix what ever may be wrong. Some parts stores will check the codes for free, in an effort to sell you a sensor or something, though some have a policy of not resetting it unless you buy the part from them - some garages will do it for free, other's charge, call around or just purchase an inexpensive code scanner yourself, its a handy thing to have. You can get cheap ones for under $50.

I've gotten that done before, the code came up with moisture in the gas tank and it required dry gas, that was put in but there must still be some moisture in the tank because it came back on but why won't it reset by disconnecting the battery like other cars?

Moisture in the gas is not a code that would be thrown by an OBDII system, there are about 30 or so(depending on the make/model car) EVAP codes and not one of them is moisture in the gas. The answer to why it won't reset like other cars is that it is resetting like other cars but something is wrong triggering the light to come back on right away - its not that uncommon. The readiness monitors can't evalutate all sensor's/systems upon initial start up but many of them do, and its hard to believe an EVAP code would come up that quick.

If she lives in NY you will need to get what ever is wrong fixed before inspection time, with the new NYVIP system you can't just reset the light and bring it in for inspection, it will come back as a readiness monitor rejection. Post what code is coming on and I'll help you figure out what is going on with the vehicle. If the light has come on more then once for the same code it probably has something wrong with it.
