Reputable Hand Wash Damaged My Hood

So while I was out running errands today, I decided to try out a reputable hand wash for the first time. I detail cars on the side, and have been busy, so I said why not.

So I pay the 8 dollars, and make the 30 minute drive home, and see this when I park in my driveway.

http://www.flickr.com/photos/bryangee87/8375310122/
I immediately drove back to Fresno, and talked to a supervisor. I remained calm and told her to ignore the rock chips, and look at my clearcoat. She agreed that their high pressure hose caused the damaged, but said they are not at fault due to amount of rock chips I have on the car.

I told her that I wax the car monthly, and I've never had any paint issues. She said they will pay for some of the clearcoat respray, but didn't specifiy an amount. She told me to get an estimate, and go back and see her. She then said that she was being more than generous, and blah blah blah, and that she could just give me vouchers to the shop. I told her I won't be going back, but I do expect them to pay.

What would you guys expect in this situation? Should I fight for at least half? More?

I'm pretty pissed. I'm just about to sell the car and I really don't want to dump any money into it.

The good news it is the hood.

It should be fairly cheap to fix.

Good luck man!

its not gonna be a simple clear respray. Most likely they will have to repaint the entire hood

With the condition of the front end, I might as well respray the bumper if it comes to that. I literally have a million chips, plus slight paint damage from impact with a cat at 65mph.

if I was the car wash, I wouldn't give you a dime. That is a cheap respray that was done previous. Clearcoat shouldn't peel like that. The undercoat was never prepped correctly, it is no wonder why you have a million rock chips.

Yea,I'm not happy with the job that was done after the accident. Plus, it swirls up waaayy too easily.

If I paid my deductible, would insurance pay for a front-end respray?

I don't know. I would call up and find out. Might not be worth it for you though.

I'd get a few estimates and have the car wash pay to get it fixed. If your hood didn't have that huge blemish before you took it to them, then its more than likely their fault isn't it?

That's wrong morally. Its not their fault the paint quality was bad
Legally they should fix it but I wouldn't take advantage of it.

How long ago was the car painted ?

Yeah, I would go back to the place that painted your car and see what compensation you can get from them.

I would lower it. Sitting like a 4x4 is likely to cause more rocks to hit your hood than your windshield, which can more easily be replaced.

Wink

I had the car fixed 8/11 I believe.

And the windshield has just as many chips. I've driven through lots of construction areas.

The car wash should pay to have the hood redone and you should pay for the bumper so they match

When the shop resprayed my car, he resprayed the whole front end, and the entire left side. So half of my car has shitty paint.

That is a shame that happened. If you end up getting the front end resprayed I would look into getting a clear bra installed especially if you plan on holding onto the car for a while. As for the car wash, they are not entirely responsible since most of cars they wash don't result in damage like yours. I agree with the comment above on going back to the shop who originally painted the car.

+1

The odds of a pressure washer peeling clear coat if painted properly is nil. The only way a pressure washer will peel anything like that would be if they had it set to the highest pressure, with the spray set to a pencil thin beam, pointing at it for a bit of time. I don't know about this, man...

the down side is that most carwash joints have clauses that absolutely deny all responsibility to damage.

the plus side is that its the hood, have it painted or vinyl wrap it and roll on.

I'd contact the shop that repainted your hood. Any reputable shop would guarantee their work.

If they give you shit or dont do exactly what you want you can escalate to state farm or tell them you'll have to contact state farm about the unsatisfactory work.

So even so the work has been done for about a year and a half, and there has been damage from rock chips, cats, ect, the shop should back his work still?

Sorry for the questions, this has never happened to me. I just want to take the right steps

Was it statefarm that referred you to thaf shop ?
If so, it should be a lifetime warranty. Instead of going back to that shop tell statefarm that they did a shitty job and u want it redone somewhere else.

Keep in mind, if the shop has to redo that job, they're not gonma be happy about it and most likely not do a good job second time around.

Is it a privately owned shop or corporate.?

See, I was worried about that. When I originally asked him to paint the whole car, he was being a dick about it and I'm not painting the whole car.

I don't think he would be happy to see the car back.

And its privately owned.

The mpg gains from drafting off tractor trailers doesn't out weight the cost of a million rock chips.
