Why does the key fob send out a signal without pressing a button?
...The theft works by setting up two antennas, one near the targeted vehicle and one near the holder of the key fob — be it in a purse, bag or pocket. This equipment can usually be purchased for $100 to $1,000. The person with the antenna aimed at the owner of the key fob needs to get within 26 feet of the target. In a store, this could be a few aisles away, so as to not arouse suspicion.
Once the antenna is near the intended victim’s key fob, the key transmits a low-power signal to the antenna, which is then relayed to the antenna near the vehicle. Once that occurs, the thief can unlock the doors and drive away (if the vehicle has push-button start).

The only way I can see a signal being sent out is if the buttons are being pressed unintentionally in a purse, pocket, etc.

I don't think they are talking about "push-button" fobs but rather the newer keyless/no button push on the fob entry/start remotes.....ie keep the fob in the pocket or purse all the time....and the car will lock and unlock on its own.

clearly you are not a woman.....nor have you experienced getting into a woman's car....only having to wait 5 minutes outside the car.....for her to dig around in her purse to find the keys to unlock the car.

with this technology, I bet they just need enough signal to get in the car, start it and drive it around the corner onto a flatbed and that's it. Pretty slick operation

If it could keep her from scratching the paint near the door handle with her rings I'd be in, this is useless and in the end will lead to more problems than the simple key ever could. In an effort to eliminate both problems, you drive and open her door for her. Chivalry is dead, we're just protecting our paint.

^ That's a different issue, but an important one as well. I'd be scared to go into... well any building with my car parked outside. Anybody can just get in, start it, and drive away. There's probably a shutoff switch if they get too far, but they might have a tow truck waiting or something, at which point it's useless.
