Why does the key fob send out a signal without pressing a button?

...The theft works by setting up two antennas, one near the targeted vehicle and one near the holder of the key fob — be it in a purse, bag or pocket. This equipment can usually be purchased for $100 to $1,000. The person with the antenna aimed at the owner of the key fob needs to get within 26 feet of the target. In a store, this could be a few aisles away, so as to not arouse suspicion.

Once the antenna is near the intended victim’s key fob, the key transmits a low-power signal to the antenna, which is then relayed to the antenna near the vehicle. Once that occurs, the thief can unlock the doors and drive away (if the vehicle has push-button start).

I didn't understand that part either.

The only way I can see a signal being sent out is if the buttons are being pressed unintentionally in a purse, pocket, etc.

I don't think they are talking about "push-button" fobs but rather the newer keyless/no button push on the fob entry/start remotes.....ie keep the fob in the pocket or purse all the time....and the car will lock and unlock on its own.

I can add this to the reasons I think push button start is useless.

clearly you are not a woman.....nor have you experienced getting into a woman's car....only having to wait 5 minutes outside the car.....for her to dig around in her purse to find the keys to unlock the car.

Yea those no push button fobs are weak. My buddy got a g37s right when they came out and off course he has that key fob. I asked him to drive his car, try it out you know, and he said no, that he was in a hurry and had to go somewhere. We'll he was standing beside his car and I just pushed him out of the way, got in, started it and drove off haha Made a circle around the block and came back. We had a good laugh about that

with this technology, I bet they just need enough signal to get in the car, start it and drive it around the corner onto a flatbed and that's it. Pretty slick operation

If it could keep her from scratching the paint near the door handle with her rings I'd be in, this is useless and in the end will lead to more problems than the simple key ever could. In an effort to eliminate both problems, you drive and open her door for her. Chivalry is dead, we're just protecting our paint.

If some geek is going to target my $30K 2009 TL by sitting in a parking lot for 2 hours waiting for my wife to pull up and go to the Cheesecake Factory, more power to him, he can have it.

Yeah, I love my push button start. If my car gets stolen it'll be insurance's problem...

Perfectly illustrated by Clarkson when he reparks Hammond's Challenger in the middle of the street in "that one episode".

^ That's a different issue, but an important one as well. I'd be scared to go into... well any building with my car parked outside. Anybody can just get in, start it, and drive away. There's probably a shutoff switch if they get too far, but they might have a tow truck waiting or something, at which point it's useless.

^Yeah. I'm all for technology, especially when it comes to cars. But if something isn't foolproof...then it's no longer a convenience, just a bad idea.
