Remote Car Starters

***Didn't get any responses in the A/V forum so I thought I'd try here****

When I bought my Pathfinder the previous owner alreay had one installed on it, the remote no longer works. I think it needs reprogramming but I didnt get the manual with the car and after waiting literally on hold today for over 1.5 hours to get info about it from the maker of the remote, I decided to go with the 'fuck that, im gonna just get a new one' policy.

So I know nothing about them so I need some help. Basically I want it to remote start the car and I want to be able to use that remote to lock/unlock the doors. Its a 98 Pathfinder with a factory alarm system, so I dont need another security system. If someone wants to go through all that trouble for an 8 year old SUV then they can have it .

So any suggestions? Im basically looking for something cheap that will do those two things.

Thanks

Go w/ a reputable shop that has been in business a while. Not the least expensive.

The control module is temperature sensitive.

the one in my car is doing funny things, but can not get service because the guy went out of business.

Worst case you could always have them replace the old unit with a new one, only a couple hundred bucks...

You can get a cheap alarm that will do the same thing...but what you're probably looking at is there is water that might have shorted your alarm system....it's just old....or the ground is no good.

I'd let a stereo/alarm shop take a look at it first. The one that's in there I'm sure could be fixed, or the remote made to work. It will be alot easier & cheaper then putting an new system in.

But if you have to, the shop should be able to just give you a new brain & use the wiring that's already in place.
Either way....go to a shop.

You can probably buy the autostarter alone for 150-200 and get them to install it. How do they want to charge you for it?

i think any DEI brand would be alright. just stay away from the no name ones off ebay and other places. my friend bought a few of them, and they all crapped out in under 2 weeks.

i bought a viper a few years back, and it's still working , i think i paid like 140, and installed myself.

a bit off topic, but what's the use of a remote start? to have the car already warmed up when you get in? also how do you know when the car is warmed up?
