Say you're at a dead stop, you floor it and the tires chirp and fight for traction for a second and then it hooks up. When at around 40mph the car shifts into 2nd gear, how come the car chirps it's tires again? This is on a regular car, say with 200-225hp. I know the tires spin and chirp when at a dead stop, but why does it do it when it's at speed.

my guess is, judging by when i do it, that "jumping" or releasing the clutch too early does it. Consider thisl if you don't give the car enough gas while releasing the clutch, the engine obviously chokes and dies. Same kind of goes with 1st-2nd; if you release the clutch too early, the excess power will be released too early and be translated in the form of the wheels spinning too much, and give the tires a loss in traction. This is just a guess, however.

Because the torque on the wheels is overcoming the frictional force the tires make with the road surface. That only happens when you pop out the clutch too fast. Drive smoother and it won't happen.

This was on an automatic, but i experienced it in a manual too. For the manual, I rode shotgun in a S2K, and each time the dude shift I could feel the car "lurch foward" or something, like it got a slight kick in the pants.

this was a AT car that at 40 mph it has a slight tire chirp.
unless the driver had a auto/stick much like in the Acura CL-S,TL-S and the 300Ms what could have happened was with an auto/stick is if you rev the motor up and it's for example in 2nd gear and stuck in the 2nd due to the autostick feature. when the driver bumps into 3rd. there's a 1/2 second or brief period where he/she is basically freewheeling(the car isn't in gear)then if the driver doesn't lift the power is applied shortly there after. cause the tires to chirp or small "burnie"

Too much power, not enough grip. I assume its a front wheel drive car.. it can happen in the rain.

In an auto, the power of the car is overcoming the grip of the tires. With my Trans Am i used to rip going into second. Now i have a tq converter, and with the shift extension, i get back into the powerband so damn hard that the car tears ass sideways going into 2nd, and chirps hard going into 3rd.

my dads vette does the same thing now w/ the 3.42's. If you hit into second (auto car) hard it'll go sideways.

btw, the GTO chirps hard into 2nd, and will chirp from 2nd - 3rd and 3rd - 4th (at 90 mph)
