question about the VW GTI
 
I was over at my girlfriend's brother house(he's got 01 Celica GT). He has friends with MAD cars(this one friend has a Eclipse that's CRAZY) then his one friend that used to have a old style Civic Si(the 2 door) with Jackson Supercharger and all kinds of other stuff on it. anyhow he just sold it like a month ago and just got his new VW Gti VR6. he said right now he's around 200 HP(he's stock)(6 speed) he said once he puts on his pipe and chip he'll be running with the new V-6 Accord 6 speed. He said I should go drive a new GTI. I don't know weither I'll stay Honda if it's as good as they claim it is. They said their easy to mod:dunno: he said plus the mod parts are pretty reasonable.

A friend of mine has a GTI 1.8T. Those are easy to mod, but I don't really know what chipping a VR6 will do.

Nice cars, but I think a little expensive for what you get. Not bad I guess. Best buy is a 1.8T, not the VR6

The VR6 has been around for awhile (about as long as the dated GTI styling) so there are numerous mods available. I think that jackson racing makes a supercharger, so if you have the $$$ you can pretty much do anything to it.

I like the old VW Corrado VR6 myself, but hey I own a vw bus, so WTF do I know :D

now his friend refused to get the 4-cylinder turbo cause he said it was "too wussy" (but i think it's only 20 hp difference) :rolleyes:
but i was looking around at aftermarket stuff for the 1.8 turbo you can do some CRAZY stuff to them. they got a Turbo kit for them crank it up to 250 HP:bigeek: :bigeek: .

I think you can go even higher than that with the right mod.

new GTi VR6 r nice. They have 12 more valves than older VR6's. With time who knows what kind of aftermarket products will be availible. But the 1.8t is also a great engine.

Just the design of the 1.8t in an engineering aspect is incredible. It has one of the best flowing heads with its 5v per cyl design. Its bottom end is bulletproof. Its made for boost. My mechanic's 1.8t GTi is makin about 320 whp last time i checked with a stock bottom end. With a chip/down pipe-exhaust/other minor mods, ive seen 1.8ts go mid-low 14's with a good driver. I was contemplating a 1.8t swap but those engines r pricy. Oh well, a t4 60-1 hifi would be a nice add on to my good ol 12v VR6 :).

I hear VW dealers are antsy about mods. On another note...my friend has a 2002 VW 1.8t and so far has blow three coilpacks...also according to him from the service manager...vw has redesigned the coilpacks 11 times! That's crazy! And we thought we had problems...

I dunno about redesigning 11 times. I think its a minor problem. Trust me im not one to stand up for VW's reliability, but then again, my mom's Acura TL-P is prolly gonna be gettin a new tranny so when it comes to problems.......tranny about to go out is a wee bit bigger.;)

Anyway, each dealer has thier own policies im sure its the same with u honda boys. But obviously, if u chip a car, it will void warrenty seeing how in the 1.8t's case, you're pushin more boost than the factory setting and basically programed the ECU with an aftermarket company's chip. So of course they'd void it. Also, ive never seen a coilpack blow up, ive seen a couple crack causing arching..

I use to hang with the VW/Audi crowd, seeing how I drove a modded S4.

While you can chip and supercharge those cars to high levels of hp, there is a lot lost to the transmission for some reason, so real whp is lower than expected. That's why even chipped 1.8T Golf's had some trouble running below 6's in 0-60 times.

The other problem is that VW and Audi are VERY anti modding. They painted the ECU cover of my S4 to see if I was chipping the car (I did, but they never found out). The reason? The turbos blow by 50k because of the excessive boost the chips demand.

Finally, it takes a lot to make those cars handle as nice as the BMW's, AMG's, and Honda/Acuras for that matter.

Well, different strokes for different folks. I dunno what u mean by an excesive loss of hp to the ground seeing how GTi VR6's have about a 12-15% loss. Maybe u had more since u had quatro. I put down 178 WHP on a Dynojet. So off the top of my head i was makin little over 200 crank HP.

I agree about the handling, even with my coilovers my friend's prelude with Tein's handle much better. But i also have about 60/40 weigth distribution with my heavy vr6. 1.8ts handle much better. Ive never heard of them "painting" ecu's. Mine certainly wasn't.

Judging a car's capability from 0-60 is not very accurate. Liek i said before i know plenty of 1.8t's with about $1k worth of mods runnign low-mid 14's.

chip 500, dp/exh=$ ?, intake=100?,

APR Stage 3=about $3500

bigger turbo, injectors, bigger intercooler, chip programing, other additional stuff(boost controller/guages/LSD optional-but recomended/wastegate/etc) and some race gas will have a 1.8t abour 300whp range. Thats with a stock bottom end.

So to cap it off. $3500-4000 on a 1.8t = 300whp+ with soem 116 octane.

Anyway, enough about the 1.8t those VR6 engines r great ay?:D

Low-mid 14 sec 1.8t is with basic chip that ups boost, runnin on 93 octane.

I know some of you guys dislike VW but really the power to the size of the car is pretty incredible. imagine taking the 98-02 V-6 Accord motor and bolting into a new Si. (I know your saying there's a lot of custom work) but just work with me. the size of car to the size of motor is pretty good.
toJimmiPGTI: do you think without NOS or wild internal engine (like forged or boreing)work is there a way to get 275 or 300 HP out of a VR6 GTI. cause really if you guys look at the price of their mods it's pretty reasonable.

you know the race I'd like to see a 02 or 03 VR6 GTI(stick) vs 03 Accord V-6(automatic).
i think it would pretty good run. :cool:

VR6's have strong bootm ends. My mech's other car is a custom AWD 12v VR6 turbo puttin out about 300+hp on stock bottom end with a copper HG. Vr6's like N20:D

Um, last time i checked accord r tugboats.....

The new VR6 is very nice. 2.8 liter 24 valve. 200 hp close ratio 6 speed.

Soon there will be a new option of a 3.2 liter VR6.

If the warranty wasn't so bad and the car didn't handle poorly stock, I might have looked into the 337, but oh well.

The R32 is impressive though.

Anyway, I like the VW's too, a buddy of mine just bought a Silver Corrado about 2 month ago.. (SLI?? I think) Damn that car is quick for an all stock car that is well over 8 years old.

Yeah, it was my cousin. We're both stock.
He actually beat me to 80 by about 1.5 car lengths. Only reason is that I got a bad launch and spun too much. He had me by 2 lengths off the launch before my tires grabbed. But I made up .5 a length to 80. If we both our tires grabbed at the same time, it would have been even....maybe me winnin by a half a car length.

I have an '02 gti 1.8t and the car is quick. I would pick the 1.8t over the vr6. The new vr6 have 201 hp and the 1.8t has 180 hp, but spend $400-500 and you'll have like 205 at the wheels. As for the chips for the vr6 it's not the same the chips add like 10 hp and don't cost much less. But both engines are great. It is true that dealers don't like the chips, but they do have to service the car unless they can prove that it was that "chip" that caused the damage. The chips are desined to work within the turbos efficency range so there should be no problem with blowing your turbo. The only problem I have with turbo charged engins is that you need to give them a minute or two to cool after u have driven it.
