Prophylactic of choice???

So I am quickly learning that my car, and not me, really wants to go fast....all the time.

For her protection and mine, I am going to invest in a little something to keep from catching something awful, like a ticket, or worse, a suspended license.

So, I've been researching, but wanted to poll....what are people using and what are their thoughts on the best out (for under $400).

Have been looking at the following:

V1 (of course)
K40 Rd850
Cobra XRS 9960G

Thoughts??

None of those are under $400, are they? I think the 9500ix is $500, and I have heard mixed reviews on the GPS. The Cobra I listed is $260, and GPS enabled, but also has gotten mixed reviews.

I got mine for $399 after coupon last April from Escort directly. Deals are out there, you just need to look for them.

i like my v1 especially being able to tell the genearal direction it is coming from

also i think you be able to afford a really good one after getting such a good deal

also is Prophylactic suppose to be some legal term???

Escort 8500-9500. I have the 8500 and the V1 and the V1 never gets used by me, its in the wifes truck (which she recently got a ticket with) When i have to use that vehicle i take my 8500 out of my car and put it in the car im driving. Way to many false alarms with the V1 and the expert meter is no where near as good on the V1 as the passport. I will soon be upgrading to the 9500, a friend has it and its very nice.

To reduce falses on the V1 disable X band. I never get falses, & no one uses X band much.

V1 here...

and in NJ, if it isn't laser, it is X band for the radar...

Works fine if people actually use X for any thing, but in all my travel (which is a lot) Most stores implement some sort of K now for doors/scanners etc that set it off. The new 9500 with the ability to have it not go off at predetermined gps location (unless the frequency is different) is awesome. Plus the escort in my testing has better detection of laser and has saved me every single time.

I said it before... I'd rather have it false & let me decide then for it to not go off & then I get caught. Let me take it rather then a microchip.

9500ix ordered.
Everything I have read, mostly on various car forums like these, say the gps makes the difference and that the V1 needs refreshing. I found those who spoke as owners of both was most influential in my decision. 9 out of 10 who owned both said the 9500ix is the favorite

I know both are excellent, so it comes down to a personal choice...

I've never owned any type of these radar detectors before.. do they really work well? I'm just curious.

After having the V1 and using it for a day...hands down worth the money I paid. Those directional arrows are golden as well as the bogey counter.

I have the 9500ix and the gps works really well. It still gives some false alerts around dense areas, but it has never locked out a cop or anything like that. It actually saved me a month or so ago when a cop was hiding near a speed sign that's always there. It locked out the speed sign and showed the cop's K band

Unless the cop is using the exact same frequency as the one you choose to target at that location then it will still go off. It works really well. My friend has one and loves it. Also you can choose not to as well. Also the new 95001x with the database of known red light and speed camera locations is nice.

yeah that is what i like about my V1, except when you are in a shopping mall area and it reads 9 on the counter, but there is always mute, also i do not have mine on the most selective mode ethier, so that does not help ethier

I wasn't aware the Escort was that advanced. Maybe I'll look into it. But the arrows are what sold me on the V1. Of course I've been using it for 6+ years now. Going to be hard to change.

I abandoned radar dectors and adopted two very important driving habits

1. Always use cruise control
2. Never double digit speed (nothing over 9mph past the speed limit)

I can't vouge for any other state, but this works in Texas. As anyone that has road with me can tell you, I drive fast. Incorportating these habits still allows me to drive "fast" and keeps me from getting tickets (knock on wood). I have been doing this for 6 years now and haven't received a speeding since (I drive at least 15K miles a year). Prior to that I would get at least 2 tickets a year.

Right when you get a speeding ticket, you will forget about these driving habits and make a thread about how to fight a speeding ticket in Texas.

personal opinion:

wont this put you in a position to speed ALL the time, possibly resulting in an overall greater chance of getting a ticket by a cop w/o radar? i could see how a detector could lead to more trouble than good, esp. in metropolitan areas (as opposed to strict highway driving, midwest, etc).

at least, around the tri-state area, i could see a detector as a not-so great decision.

Nope. My driving habits havent changed with having the detector. I'm still cautious, I keep my eyes open and I'm still cruising about 10 over...maybe 15 pending the flow of traffic (in LA someones always going faster than every one else.)

Basically the detector lets me know that when I DO want to zip ahead of some slower traffic, or occasionally open her up a bit (and the challenger LOVES to be opened up) that I'm most likely in the clear to do it. I still proceed with caution. This is on the freeways.

Local/City streets I'm pretty good with my driving in terms of keeping it safe.

The expert meter is far better as well. It will show up to like 12 different signals and their strength.

The arrows are nice but more of a gimmick. Plain and simple if they go off slow down.

Whether I had my V1 on or off, it didn't change my driving/speeding habits. Although since I got my Mini in June, I haven't found a good permanent spot for it where I can leave it mounted all the time (and insure that someone isn't going to see it if my car is parked), so it's been sitting in a bag in my trunk this whole time.

Only thing that bothers me is Laser, as the only ticket I got with the V1 was driving up from FL earlier this year, I didn't realize the speed limit changed from 70 to 65 like 2/10 mile earlier and I got hit with Laser (while going 80). Coming around the bend, I got shot, my radar went off just as I saw the cop, and it was too late.

I need to add some laser deflection/diffuser to my car to help with Laser protection. Anyone have any suggestions? Something that isn't going to cost crazy money either..

No front plate and a black bra really help.

but then a black bra looks like crap too, and they don't target the paint that much

So you put one on when you travel (to protect your paint and from radar/laser) and take it off when you get to your destination. I loved my bra on the TL and after having tested with a friend who is a cop made a difference with laser and radar (side note his black ws6 trans am with a bra was very hard to get at all with laser and the range to actually pick it up was just a couple hundred feet, my tl was less than 1/8 mile with bra and no license plate). they still they look like crap and and taking it on every time you get to your destination would get OLD real fast, now if you are on a road trip i might understand it then
and removing the front plate will help dramatically cause that is there primary target

In Ontario they're illegal and I understand that the cops have "busta-busta" devices which allow them to tell if you have one... Are any of these detectors undetectable? Do cops routinely use detector-detectors?

Erm... I would not say that 9 mph over the limit is "fast" (not that there's anything wrong with that). That's "traffic speed" pretty much everywhere I drive.
