You can't go wrong with either, my vote goes to the X5. I just like the interior and exterior better. But to make a good decision I would have to drive both.
Will you be going with a 6 or 8 cylinder? May I also suggest an Infiniti FX45 or Porsche Cayenne S?

Burn some dust here
Out of those two, I would take the X5.
I would look at these (in order) in that price range though:
1) GL450 - Comfortable, great power and tranny, best interior in class
2) X5 - looks great but have no experience with it
3) Escalade - Drove a new one last weekend...HUGE improvement
4) Audi Q7 - very comfortable and great interior but have never driven it

on the new X5. I like Audis in general, but in this case, the BMW moved ahead with its classy interior.

Id choose Audi or the new 07 MDX from acura. Both are relly nice and are unique. Id lean more towards the audi as it does not have the "armor grille". As now the toureg from VW can have a V10 DTI for about 59999

I love the new Q7
I sat in one at the Auto Show a few weeks back and it was by far my favorite new car there. The audio system is unreal. I've driven a V6 X5 and it did nothing for me.

I drove the Q7 at an Audi event.....it was the best SUV I have ever driven. ....although it is in a different class, the Q7 made our 05 Murano feel downright pathetic.

Do you need 7 passenger seating?
Do you need cargo room and 7 passengers at the same time?
Are you going to be towing or going offroad?
Is this for you or the wife?
Toyota Sienna XLE AWD has more room, better safety, better fuel economy, and lower ego emmissions than an X5 and Q7. And if it's for your wife, the cheaper vehicle you can stuff her in, the more money left over for toys for yourself!

Thanks for all ur opinions and votes, I'm going to get a V8, and it is for me, not my wife.
I want a German SUV at this time, so I won't consider MDX, FX, or TOYOTA...
I'm not sure if I really need 7 passenger seating, but those 2 SUVs are my favourites for now.

I suppose it depends on if you're looking at V8 models or V6 models. If you're looking at V8 models, you can't go wrong with the Audi or the BMW. I suppose it's all about brand preference.
If you're interested in V6 models, I'd say skip them both and grab an MDX. The new MDX is incredible. I haven't had the opportunity to drive one yet, though have inspected it pretty closely in person. If I were to have one all around vehicle, it'd probably be an MDX. It has an incredible interior that is put together really well (I'd say up to Audi standards). The exterior is striking, something that goes against Acura's conservative history. The headlights look menacing and the grille looks pretty hot in person. Further, many articles are saying that the MDX is truely a sport-oriented SUV now. It offers great versatility and has an incredible AWD system. It has everything that you could want in a crossover/on-road SUV.
When I was in the dealership getting the oil changed about a week ago there were TONS of people checking out the new MDX. The demonstrators (they had three or four of them) were always out on drives. I think the market is receiving the MDX quite well.
Further, it's a great value. A Sport + Entertainment package MDX is about $50k. Considering all the features and equipment this thing comes with (and the overall package)

Saw the new X5 today, very nice looking.......the change isn't drastic but very clean and updated looking.
If you can swing the 07 4.8 X5, go for it.
The Q7 is kind of ugly imo, but they do lease out well if you're going that route.
