Performance of Various Oil Filters

In the link above, I made a little chart with the recent particle counts along with oil analysis results we've had on Bobistheoilguy. It compares the performance of various oil filters (not the best comparison) when used at different intervals, in different cars, through a particle count.

It'd be great if users on AcuraZine can run various filters on their car and have particle counts done, so we may evaluate the performance of various filters.

Draw your own conclusions; I'll state mine later...

The Jeep had the most miles between oil change intervals and the greatest amount of aluminum, iron, molybdenum, and insolubles as well as more particles in the 2 to 10 micron range.

Moly is simply an oil additive. Rotella T Synthetic 5W40 contains 0 Moly if I remember correctly, so the 100ppm or so is simply residual from the previous oil.

The Jeep engines can have a Fe "dandruff" problem; but its sometimes manageable w/ the use of a thicker oil, such as a 5W40. It seems especially bad this time due to the fuel dilution and dirt ingestion.

The Aluminum, Iron, and Insolubles are all being affected by the fuel and insolubles.

Surprisingly, the PureOne didn't do as well as it claimed, but its probably due to the dirt. Theoretically, a filter will be operating at its highest efficiency during the last 30% of its life (which will be much shorter than its first 30%), as a filter becomes more efficient as it plugs up. So, with the higher mileage on the Pureone, I was expecting it to show better results.

I guess the Wix didn't do as badly as I thought it would...on paper, the Wix's efficiency was a lot worse than the PureOne's. Guess I'll have to investigate a bit further into Purolator's efficiency claims...

I would have expected dirt ingestion and insolubles to be much higher on the car with the K&N fiter. Even thought they flow well, K&N filters are rumored to let a lot of dirt pass through. I guess it's not as bad as I thought.

I did in the link to BITOG.

It wasn't really a fair comparison as they were different cars, producing different levels of contaminants, operating under different conditions. Sump sizes were different as well, which had one of the largest impacts. The Jeep had the smallest sump, thus the concentrations of the particles were higher. If you follow the link I posted, I adjusted the readings to be in line w/a 5qt sump for comparison purposes.
