Looking to possibly pick up one of these to learn manual on and have a second chill car in addition to the CL. Considering it would have fairly high miles(im looking for one that has 80k-90k) will I run into a lot of expensive problems in the next year or so. I do not plan on doing very much aftermarket, maybe just an M kit and exhaust. What do you think, would it be a waste of money? Thanks

I bought a 1970 AMC Javelin with a 3spd for $50 to learn how to drive a stick... The days of running/driving $50 cars may be over, but there are still cheap beaters you can buy to... ahhh.. beat on...

Time to head over to http://www.roadfly.org/ to do some research on their forums...

I've always wanted an old BMW 2002

well if it was me and had a CLS for a 2nd car.. then i say get a E30. Less issues and more fun to autox and take around a track.
Plus you can get a decent one for around 5k

My family has both a 1987 325 is and a 1999 323 is and both are great. THe 323 has 70k miles and the 325 has 160k and both run like champs. The E30 (1984-1991) are great cars and you can pick them up for cheap. WIth a little maintnence they will last a long time. They are also easy to work on yourself. BOth have aftermarket support, although the E36 (1992-1999) has more that any other BMW, but for what you want it will be fine. Having driven both and learned stick on the 325, I would say the E30 is easier to learn on. THis was also with a short shift kit installed in the 325. If you do look at E30s, look at the 88 and aboves. Thats the year they got rid of the huge bumpers, and I think they added driver side airbags around there.

That is a good price. If you could get him down to 5000 that would be a steal.

You can get an 95-97 m3 for cheap nowadays, especially at an auction. I picked a convertible up for 7500 and sold for 10.

You're talking at least 15-20k and I would be very weary of buying from auctions. If the car was repossesed, whats to say they could afford to maintain it if they couldn't make payments? And M3s are hold their value, but have a high entry cost. Hell even 1988 M3s with 120k miles will run you 10k dollars.

CD.. I picked up an '88 325 convertible this summer off autotrader- $4500, 80 K miles on it, in amazing shape- you can't go wrong- plus with the JC chip, they zip around pretty quick- no rocket though. I just use it to bomb around when the weather is nice.

And I don't know how you're getting M3s for that cheap. M3s hold their value better than 99% of cars. And here are some E36 M3s, starting at 10k for 1995s with over 100k miles.

the first one

the second one, but it sounds fishy. If most go for 20k and that one is 8k I'd be weary of buying it. I'll try and see more about it later.

it depends how the cars have been treated. I know of someone who has a late 80's 3 that runs great, and then Rondog had a few problrms with his 99 325.

is>es

Its clean, but the IS motor is more sporty and fun. The eta, "e", motor was limited to 4700 RPM. THe "i" motor has a rev limiter at 6400k rpm. The eta motor was more of a better daily driver where the "i" motor was more of an enthusiast motor with more hp higher up in the RPM range.

http://www.strictlyeta.net <-- has good info on both the I and E, eta, motors as well as other good stuff about E30s.

Me too, Astroboy has one :jealous:

I'd love a 993, but I'm too poor to buy one yet....

Cheap 993 (but I've seen 993's w/ half the mileage for about the same price) :http://autotrader.com/fyc/vdp.jsp?car_id=171886727

It would probably make for a nice (road)track car tho'...

Prob 8K cuz it's horribly ugly. Worst e36 ever almost.

$8K + $8K to fix it back right would make it about normal.
