Old School Color Names
Old School Color Names
Is it just me or have car color names gotten just lazy in the last few years? Where have the regal and fancy sounding names gone? For example, here are just a few colors offered by General Motors in the 1950s:
Honda has some decent ones like Blue Sensation and Orange Revolution but if you ask me, paint names today are just dull and boring and sometimes even without thought. Hyundai has a color called Black Noir Pearl which is basically twice as black but half of it in French. Seriously? That's the best you can do? Maybe I'm just a sucker for some old-fashioned marketing baloney but I think paint colors could be a bit more imaginative. Maybe it doesn't even matter.
- Empress Blue
- Chester Green
- Bolero Maroon
- Mountain Laurel
- Dawn Gray
- Sonic Blue
- Biscayne Blue
- Milori Green
- Sapphire Mist

Emberglow is a rare colour. Very striking.
Take a look at this colour:

Samoan Coral originally on any 1964 Ford/Mercury increases the price substantially. I'm completing a car in this colour with a contrasting white roof, black vinyl interior, and body coloured wheels.

Buick definitely had a patriotic thing going on in 1976 but I guess that's understandable. Here are their Bicentennial-themed color names:

- Concord Green
- Colonial Yellow
- Musket Brown
- Boston Red
- Firecracker Orange
these are more recent color names (I think) but I like them
not creative or anything, but I don't see anything wrong with that.
Electron Blue
Oxford White
Balloon White
Rosso Corsa
Molten Orange
Snakeskin Green
Anaconda Green
Velocity Yellow
Mystichrome (ugly, but unique
)
and as mentioned, one of my favorite colors of all time, Hugger Orange

My car is gunmetal grey, but that is too new.
My 78 Chrysler Cordoba was primer gray, primer red, and rust. Does that count?
Seriously, was Hemi Orange a color for 68-70 Dodge Chargers? I recall a friend of mine getting his repainted in the original Hemi Orange color.

Here are a few names I came up with last night while lying in bed, waiting for the sandman.
- Shimmering Silver
- Dovetail Gray
- Winter White
- Mystic Black
- Abyssal Blue
- Garden Green
- Royal Red (like a maroon or burgundy)
- Inferno Red (fire engine red)
- Silken Beige
Honda has some good ones in the last 20 years.
• Championship White
• Electron Blue
• Super Sonic Blue
• Cyclone Blue
• Aztec Green

• Cashmere Silver

Nighthawk Black Pearl
Moroccan Red Pearl
Kinetic Blue Pearl
Mayan Bronze Metallic
Vortex Blue Pearl
Some 2008+ Acura colors. Don't seem too boring to me. There's a fine line between tacky and classy that car makers try to market their cars with, so they aren't going to have paint names that make you chuckle.
