Sounds like the forks are under-dampened. Check the fork fluid level and see if it is the correct amount from the top of the tube. This is usually in the shop manual. Also the viscosity of the fork oil can affect the damping, most 70's era Japanese bikes use ATF viscosity (7.5W).

OK, looking for advice here. I'm thinking about getting rid of the Aprilia. Don't get me wrong... I LOVE the bike, but I am not really doing any track days or even hard mountain riding. Most of my rides are local, going to events, or short road trips for weekends away which involved 99% highway riding.
So I'm thinking of getting rid of the bike for something geared more towards touring. I don't want a Harley or big Goldwing or anything. Kind of looking for something like a Concours-14 or similar... but I don't really need that much power. I also like the BMW GS series, however, I'm not exactly tall, so I do not think I will fit on one. I then thought going back to the original bike I wanted (before buying the Aprilia) which is the SV650. Also, it does not have to be new. I don't mind buying pre-owned. My Aprilia was pre-owned and has been flawless... so I'm not worried about that.
Thoughts?

I take it you're interested in the naked SV? If so, go with the 2nd generation (2003+), it's fuel injected and faster than the 1st gen. You can probably find some pretty good pre-owned off CL for a pretty good price. I started out with the SV and it was awesome, wish I went with the 2nd gen than the 1st.

Hi jb
The touring bug has bitten you. In addition to the C14, check out the Honda ST. Expensive and large, but buttery smooth, powerful, and very comfortable. I still like the Suzuki V-Stroms, both the 650 and 1000 variants. They're a bit dated, but are anvil reliable with huge aftermarket support. The Triumph Tiger is a cool bike, although dealer network is somewhat limited. The Yamaha FJ is also a great high speed tourer. It's developed quite the following. You'd probably love my modified German Varadero, but not available for regular production in the NA marketplace.
I've owned two BMW GSs. I won't own another. Very expensive to maintain and not reliable. I tour extensively with my bikes, and need a bike that will be trouble-free for the duration of the trip. The BMWs did not offer me this.

I've looked at the VStroms, but not crazy about the looks. Maybe I'll look into the Triumph. There's actually a dealer not far from me, so that wouldn't be an issue. I've even thought about the Street Triple which kind of gives me the sport I want, but actually has a decent amount of luggage options, whereas my bike has little to none. I cannot even use a tank bag b/c my gas tank is not metal and there is no place to attach one.
I've looked at the Honda and Yamaha as well, but again, think it may be more bike then I need. I'm not sure.
Also, thanks for the info on the BMW's. I was kind of steering away from them and now I definitely will...

Well, we had two showings today, so I went to the local Yamaha/Kawasaki dealer to check somethings out. I sat on the C14 and man, is that a big bike. Too big for my taste. I could barely lift if off of the kickstand. The sales guy suggested the Kawasaki ER6n or the Yamaha FZ6R. But honestly, I can't see trading down that far. Plus, once I saw the bags they had attached to them, they were just Cortech bags which I could probably put on the Aprilia.
I also swung by the Ducati/BMW/Triumph dealer, but they're closed on Monday... so I'll have to hit that another time.

if you want a tourer an FJ1300 is probably the best way to go. with the bags off the bike looks like a sport bike with how the tail is designed. the bike has heated hand grips and very nice seat, as well as the ability to raise the windscreen and lower it when ever you want to. it still gives you the sport bike feel without making love to the tank.
my dad has an FJ1300AE with the air shifter, he got that one because it was too good of a deal to give up at the time. i have driven it once and it feels only slightly heavier then my sport bike but it is also a bigger bike. the power plant on it is also very nice.
my dad did venture into the cruiser route with an M109R and he hated it, he also drove a gold wing and hated it. i say if you are into a sport bike feel get the FJ.

I gotta say, after doing some research it really doesn't look like there is anything out there I would really want. I'll still stop by the Triumph/Ducati dealer before I make a decision, but I may just pick up some Nelson Rigg Sport Saddle bags which will work on my bike and call it a day. Between that and my new Icon backpack, I should be good to go.
For the raping I'll take on a trade-in or the time wasted trying to sell the bike I'm better off keeping it. It's still in new condition and hasn't even turned 2k miles yet... so it's probably just wiser to hang onto it. With the luggage above I can easily go on short trips and have everything I need with me. Like I said, I'll still check the Triumph/Ducati dealer, but they'd have to make me a sweet offer to consider changing...

Anyone running Engine Ice on their motorcycle? I've heard great things, but it looks like you can only buy it online?
I've been having issues with my GSXR running hot randomly. I realized that I didn't fully bleed out the air when I changed the coolant and after doing so, it's been running around 180-190. But at times it gets up to 200 at a stop or 190 if I'm pushing it. I think I might completely flush the coolant again and run engine ice.

I need to go get an emissions test on Saturday on my new (to me) bike....
I am a little nervous.
Any pointers? I read online to make sure the bike is warmed up but not crazy hot.

Yeah I was like, "really?" and the MVD lady was like "Really."
I need to confirm. I mean, I could get 'antique vehicle' plates for this thing...
EDIT: 1966 and earlier do not require. All others do here.

I just switched over to engine ice and it does run cooler. My bike use to hover around 7-8 bars (out of 10) during my rides but it now down to 5-6 bars.
I ordered it at kneedraggers.com. Shipping is free after $100 so I picked up some oil as well.

Good call, my uncle's CB750 would wear though the Honda OEM ball bearing stem bearings. I vaguely recall he switched over to the roller type and never had to change them again.

The front wheel has spoke weights and tape on weights on the rim, so I am going to take it somewhere to get the front wheel balanced first thing. I want to put on fork gators (boots) so I will leave the fork dis-assembly until I have them to put them on at the same time.
For now, putting the grab bar on and re-wiring all the 'winkers' so they actually work is the next step.
Cleaned and lubed the chain for now, but I am thinking a new chain and new sprockets will be in order soon...

Since we have a good concentration of riders in here I figured I'd post this:
I have a brand new pair of Icon ARC Mesh Overpants I am looking to sell. They are a size 30 and are meant to be worn over shorts/pants, or whatever... but can also be worn as a stand alone garment. I paid ~$125 with shipping... willing to let them go for $100 plus shipping to your location. If you' or anyone you know may be interested, let me know.

The fastener is adjustable, so a 32 could probably fit. Anything over that may be pushing it. A 34 may fit... but likely wearing the pants only (ie no other shorts or jeans or anything underneath)... but I wouldn't commit to that.

Helped out my buddy last week get back to riding again. Got his license a month ago from the MSF class and rented a Rebel 250 from Eagle Rider. Spent the 4th of July weekend riding. Been shopping gear and bikes with him.
Picked up some Alpinestar S-MX 5 vented boots yesterday because two my buddies have gone down recently. One of which had his gf on the back and went into a turn too quickly. Broken ankle out 6 weeks, and prior to his ride, we were talking about getting boots, but, he thought he didn't need them. Needless to say, he's going to be picking up a pair of boots once he's healed.
Raining today, so I'm flushing my cheapo coolant with Engine Ice, my GSXR has been running way too hot recently. Some of it had to do with a poor attempt of bleeding the air out of the bike, but, I've noticed that it runs at 210+ F at stop lights after bleeding the system. I've had the GSXR for about a month and put a lot of miles on it. Loving the bike, while the SV was a great starter bike, the GSXR was the perfect choice for me. Can't wait to go out tomorrow and go for a ride.
