precisely why I love MT.
When you stab the clutch, pull the lever, and hit the gas, you get what you want, when you want it. The predictable sequence of events gives you confidence, unlike the annoying electronic delay as the SMG thinks to itself and then makes its move. Surprisingly, the six-speed's clutch action is as light as you'll find in a BMW 3-series, despite the burden of coping with the M5's fire-breathing, 500-hp, 5.0-liter V-10. And the action of the ZF-built six-speed's long-throw shift linkage is equally light, although the gear engagement is notchy in that characteristic BMW way. In giving us the six-speed manual, however, BMW took away the ability to fully disable the stability control system. Many enthusiasts will find that unacceptable, and there will be no Ford Shelby GT500-style smoky burnouts at stoplights.

The M5 is a fearfully intimidating machine, and we've found that the SMG transmission (eleven shift modes and all) makes you feel like a victim of speed, not its master. With the six-speed, you become more confident that you can sort out this basterd, even if the stopwatch ticks away while you do.

Herr Richter, a sport sedan might be about speed, but it's also about command and control.

F10 is slower than E60 M5 as well.

Why couldn't they just fix the hydraulics and pumps of the E60 then pair it with the DCT.

I think the F10 is considerably faster. Last number I saw for the F10's 0-60 was 3.7.

I see C&D got it to 60 in 3.7.

I think MotorTrend attempts to match or best C&D which they rarely do. I don't foresee average Joe getting 3.7. Glad to hear it performs better than the E60. Freaking 92k?!, I'll wait a couple years when it's 40k.

Anyone think the next M3 will be FI and DCT?

I do think the average Joe can get 3.7 - it's not like you have to shift!! just floor the pedal.

You still need to manage wheel spin.

But yes.

Rumor is that the new M3 may be a V6-Tri-Turbo and I think DCT is a foregone conclusion.

There's been a bit of a ruckus, but I think most enthusiasts recognize the trend for CAFE purposes, and that it isn't going away. The fact that the F10 has 500ft/lb of "tourques" probably helps as well.

Launch control = 3.7s, shit.

CAFE

tri-turbo?!?!.. seems like overkill. I think two sequential turbos is more than enough. I'd do a big ass hairdryer synced with a puny one.

Launch control!

and yeah tri turbo crazy! Im not a big fan of the idea. It's gonna go out of style. It doesn't have the potential to be timeless. but I would guess it'll get great gas mileage eh.

It is going to be FI, but they will still offer a manual version.

edit: lol didn't see ttribe already answered it lol.

I think they already debunked the triturbo setup. But there is suppose to be something different about the engine.Ohh I think they said it will be a V6 and not an inline also. I dunno these area all rumors right now. BMW may be testing all of the different set ups mentioned.

Don't fret; it could still be the inline 6: http://www.f30post.com/forums/showthread.php?t=670364

(although the latest edition of Roundel is suggesting a V6 to save space)

my respect for the F10 M5 has just gone up drastically, I didn't know until just now that BMW also developed a 6MT specifically for the F10 M5 (as opposed to dumping the E39's into the E60's) and has the 6MT available as a no-cost option.

If I'm buying a car with any hint of sporting intentions, it's gotta be a manual. I doubt that would change even if I were filthy rich knowing that upper echelon cars are nearly exclusively non-manual.

Hell I plan to buy a little beater pick-up truck.... gotta be stick too.

185-mph Vancouver joyrider's motorcycle impounded [w/video]

By Jonathon Ramsey RSS feed
Posted Apr 19th 2012 5:28PM

We're losing track of how many top gunners post high-speed-run videos on public roads on YouTube and then get busted. Police take that tomfoolery personally, and you'd think they put the entire department on the case judging by how quickly the perps get caught.

Latest on the list is a Canadian motorcyclist who took his Yamaha on the Trans-Canada Highway and ran it to about 300 kph. CBC News now reports that the unidentified rider in question is 25 years old, unlicensed, riding an uninsured Yamaha R1 registered in his mother's name. Then there's the small matter of his 25 previous infractions.

Police wasted no time tracking down YouTube poster "Joe Blow," but he's been uncooperative up to now. We have no idea why he wasn't in jail already after 25 violations, but we're guessing his Internet handle will soon be changed to "Three Hots and a Cot." Scroll down to refresh your memory with a video demonstration of his stupidity.
