I could never pinpoint what it was that didn't net the Series 1 more fame. All the reviews really liked it, citing that it was something new & fresh from Shelby, and that while it was raw, it was still liveable with. It was also extremely fast for its time & solid car.
Maybe it was the federal regulations that killed it, though & the sudden hike in price afterwards that left every example 251 & beyond as just kit cars for the last 5 years of its life. The other VIN-certified cars all seem to at least hold a decent value & collector status seeing as they rarely hit the market.
