newb question about wheel bearings...

i dont know much about this part of the car...all the cv boot, axle, balljoints blah blah blah

anyways, i own a 99 integra GSR and theres been a loud vibration coming from the drivers side rear wheel. once you get up to 40 its really noticeable, and it continues all the way down to a stop

i got an alignment at firestone and the guy said it was my wheel bearing, then he said he would fix it for 700$ which is ridiculous. he said he needed to replace the balljoints and all this shit, which i think is BS. i know for a fact its not tire inbalance or camber.

anyways...do you think this is really a wheel bearing?
is there a way i could check it out?
i want to order the replacement parts and take it to my shop but i dont want to order the wrong parts. what should i replace??

thanks

My Accord six speed is my first front driver, and thusly somewhat unfamiliar with rear wheel bearings in a FWD car. The symptoms you describe, however, do sound like a wheel bearing failing. Most times a vibration is felt during an audible grinding or squealing noise. On my rear drivers and equipment I can usually verify by visual inspection and movement. Sorry I couldn't be more helpful. BTW, like your avatar with the TR. I have an original GN sitting in the garage.

You may not be able to verify it by a visual inspection as the wheel bearing may sound fine if there is no load on the wheel when you have the car up in the air. Normally a bad wheel bearing manifests itself as a harsh grinding noise whose intensity increases with the wheel's rotational speed and as the load on that wheel increases (eg: when making a turn).

$700 seems like a lot. Call PepBoys and ask them how much it costs to replace the wheel bearing on your car. My guess is that they can do it for less than 1/2 the price which you were quoted. It's been a while since I've had a car with a bad wheel bearing but these ranged from $169 - 275 depending on the make and model.

+3 for wheel bearing.

On the GSR it should be an easy fix.

jack the car up and try wiggling the wheel with the noise. is its easy to move it around then tis ur wheel bearing. better get it taken care of before it starts the melt itself onto the hub. its cheap it was like $44 for my tl. and then labor.
