I've been riding NYC buses and subways solo since I was in 5th grade! Yes, 11 years old (circa 1979). And I've never had any problems (nor have my relatives and friends) with any type of crime on the subways.....and crime in NYC was MUCH WORSE back in the 70s and 80s.

Im no tourist. Born in BK, raised in Queens. Ive seen alot. Im sure it was worse back in the day BUT it is still a problem. Even with all the cops walking around you'd be surprised at the bravery of some people.
To each his own. Im def not a fan of this idea but I'll sit in traffic all day long in my comfortable car rather than squish myself into already cramped public transportation system.

To each his own. I would say 'stupidity' more than 'bravery', particularly as NYPD likes to put the hurtin' on apprehended criminals in ways that are not always legal.
Sidenote: Yours truly was also born in Queens.

Safety Car
born in queens too - now in herald sq.
most of my friends and family live in manhattan. not one of them thinks that this change is anything less than choatic. most locals share this opinion as well. the support in this thread has come as a complete shock. esp. from those that live in/or around manhattan.
the average response to herald square and times sq being shutdown usually goes "You've GOT to be kidding me!!"
