It's nuts to give a new driver (someone with less than 5 years experience minimum) that kind of HP.
Your reasoning that 8 months and no problems plus that it "feels very firm and safe" show that you probably are too young to get it too. No offense, but it's hard to say without sounding like an old geezer. hehe (I'm 34)

You said, "She drives pretty aggressively". That is all I need to hear to know FOR SURE without a doubt that I'm correct. Giving her a fast car is just stupid. Her dad needs to have his head checked. He may have $$$, so what? How much $$ does it take to replace his daughter.

You asked about convertable vs. coupe. Coupes are always safer, but I'm getting a kick out of the safety concern all the sudden regarding coupes, but you throw it out the window regarding power.

So if she drives a convertable for 8 months with no problems, is it considered a safe car now?

Seriously, I'm not trying to talk down to you or rip on your gf. I'm sure she's a nice person and I'm sure her parents are too. I just think they have a serious problem with their judgement to give her a car like that.

I have done way more than my fair share of high speed driving and have a lot of track time to back up my conclusions. I've seen experienced drivers get into trouble with power like that, and giving that to the inexperienced just compounds the danger.
I understood what you are saying..
Thanks for spending your time to looking out for my girl.. if it was what you were trying to say!

I'll talk to my gf and her parents about what you've said.

Thank you again.

Damn, could the cars be any different. The 330 has performance, but it is no where near the S4 and M3. If she wants a sedan, then the S4 is it, if she wants a coupe than the M3 is it obviously. As for M3 vs S4. I have driven both. The S4 has a lot of tq where you need it, where as the M3 needs to be wound out. M3 handles better, but the S4 is an awesome winter car with some snow tires. As for all out power, i have seen a better driver in an S4 beat out the M3 from a roll and from a stop. But i have also seen races the other way around with the M3 coming out on top. I think a girl looks better in an M though.

MONEY ISN'T PROBLEM FOR HER.. SO ONLY PERFORMANCEWISE QUESTION..

WHICH CAR SHOULD SHE GET??

I recently just had this problem (minus the 330i). The 330i just isn't in the same league. I drove the new 05.5' 6-spd S4, an '04 M3 SMG, an '05 STI, and an '05 CTS-V.

The M3 handles VERY well and feels light on it's feet. The least torque of the bunch but felt very peppy nontheless. Two doors was a negative for me.

The S4 is indeed very nice. Interior is awesome. Quattro makes you feel very safe but eats up a ton of the 340hp. The car feels (and is) slower than my blown CLS. For $55k my new car needs to be at least as fast in a straight line.

The STI is awesome. Handles like it's on rails. Turbo lag is barely noticable. If it weren't for that damn wing...

I bought the CTS-V...today, in fact. I know, I know, it's an old man's car. But drive this thing and you'll understand. It is NOT your grandpa's caddy. Nothing like a LS6 ZO6 motor banging out 400hp/395tq through a 6-spd manual. 13.1 @ 109 quarter miles and hauls 5 adults very comfortably...for $45,600. Top Gear pitted the V8 S4 to the CTS-V and the S4 couldn't pass it in the corners and got left WAAAAAAY behind in the straights.

If I had to choose btwn the M3 and S4 I'd go S4 do to the 4 doors, but that's the ONLY reason. Don't get hung up on the V8 because the M3 weighs less and dynos almost the same as the S4.

Just FYI, for about $600, you can get a regular WRX trunk on put on the STi that doesn't have that retarded looking, boy-racer, wing. I almost bought one and did just that, but I couldn't get past the interior.

You're right about needing to drive the CTS-V. People who slam it, never drove it. Other than wheel hop on hard launches, the car handles and has plenty of power everywhere. Slap an intake, headers, cat-back and a tune and you will have another 45-60 horses at your disposal. I love american small blocks. They cant be beat.

I agree with the last couple posts that the interior is a step down even from my '01 CLS. Trust me, however, that once you get into the accelerator and start rowing through the gears you VERY quickly forget about the interior. This thing traps higher than an M5 (at least for now). As for the exterior it's really a love it or hate it design. I see quite a few base CTS's around the area where I live so I guess people here love it...

Oh, and just like my CLS, it's a total sleeper to most people.

There is no doubt that if the question is about performance the M3 is at the top. Especially if money is no object.

I don't think her dad's gonna let her daughter buy the 65.. because he has 55.. lol..

BTW, the benz dealer said that there won't be any SLK65.. nothing confirmed though.
Actually, she was considering the SLK55 AMG too, but I think it's too small..
That's true for the 2006 model year. Who knows what comes after that...
