New to me 2nd owner, unmolested

I couldn't afford one when i was younger so i got one now. It's a 92 rs and i'm the 2nd owner. It has 113k with an auto, roll down windows and manual side mirrors. There are a couple spots with rust as it's been sitting for 4 years. It has a worn driver seat but the others are nice. I hope to replace the carpet too.

The bad. the timing belt broke and the valves met their demise. It was sitting at a service shop a mile up the road for about a year. I did see it running a month or so before they started it again and the timing slipped. When it was started there was no smoke so i was fine with it.

In a quick look, there are rebuilt heads on fleabay for about $500. Obviously it's hard to tell who has quality stuff, but i may have to check locally. Maybe someone here has a good source for a rebuilt head or how to fix it successfully.

The tires are new and a couple years old, newer brakes and a new rack. The brakes are so cheap to replace all around so that won't rea

This car has good bones and i'm excited to get it running again.

Had me the first two photos, not gonna lie.

Congrats! Looks like a cool project. Don't see too many of this gen up here anymore. This is probably my favorite front end on a Teg. Should be fun to get back on its feet again.

svtmike 07-18-2019 09:09 PM

Now that’s a project!

Can’t wait to see the story unfold.

Sarlacc 07-18-2019 09:39 PM

It's weird.

I think most of us old fuckers here can, in our minds, know the smell of that interior. The feel of that fabric, the layout of that dash, the sound of that engine when it turns over. Because most of us all had Hondas/Acuras of that time period...and there is a sentimental attachment to that. But other than that...I feel nothing for the vehicle, personally. BUT Congrats to you and I hope you enjoy the hell out of it.

NSXNEXT 07-18-2019 10:24 PM

Congrats.

My first car was a 91 GS hatch 5-speed
No pics (digital cameras and cell phones were not a thing back then). Here's one from the web.

Wife drove a 93 GS 2-door hatch 5-speed as well.

Midnight Mystery 07-18-2019 11:08 PM

That looks like it ought to turn out nicely!

Thanks. Oh yeah, it has that smell. I think this is one of those cars that people our age would look for when they get older and i knew i had to snag it. It's not a gsr, but just a clean one.

dallison 07-19-2019 04:42 AM

These things are so cool. So few electronics to interfere and repair.

Looks pretty clean apart from the small rust & seat tear.
I was always a bit envious of the Integra owners when I had my '97 Civic EX. Days long past.

civicdrivr 07-19-2019 02:04 PM

Sub'd! I've always loved that body style. It looks pretty clean. Get that rust taken care of quickly before it spreads.

dallison 07-19-2019 07:19 PM

I have found a couple shops locally who can rebuild the head for $4-600. I need a tb kit now. I have found new carpeting for $165. This should help a bit of the old car smell. A driver seat or cover is next.

WTF? an Acura in an acura forum?

I was thinking that out of everyone here, i may be the only one left with one. It's old as shit, but it's still an Acura.

I have ordered a new refurbed head from a place in WV for $375 shipped. I'll need to get a timing belt kit now.

00TL-P3.2 07-22-2019 04:07 PM

@97BlackAckCL & @fsttyms1 Still have one (1G CL & 2G TL), best I can remember. So you're not alone.
Luckily, owning an Acura on an Acura board doesn't = :banned: :tomato:

Yep still have the old girl. Though my neighbor has put more miles on it in the last 2 years than me because I have been too busy to have any fun.(I let him take it out just do it doesn't sit there too much)

That's very kind of you and you have a very lucky neighbor!

Midnight Mystery 07-23-2019 01:19 AM

OP - You really lucked out finding this Teg!

It's clean, and genuinely makes me feel happy to see your photos! In fact, dare I say, it sounds like it doesn't even need "that" much work to get her back good again!

I'm really excited for this restoration project!

Still have the wife’s MDX. Would still have the TL if it hadn’t been sandwiched.

dallison 07-27-2019 07:09 AM

I've got a refurbed head and am in the process of finding all the gaskets i need. It needs everything from the head gasket up. Oem would be the most obvious option, but was hoping to find a good aftermarket option for the gaskets, tb, and water pump.

Looking forward to see how the project progresses.

Also laughing at folks calling themselves "old." It is such a relative term

Well yeah, but i wasn't sure what might be better. I have seen this but want to make sure it's of decent quality.

dallison 07-29-2019 08:31 AM

This might be a really stupid question. When a refurbed head is shipped to you, should the rockers be loose? I was swapping things over and all of them were loose. The shop says that they are shipped that way since you have to adjust when setting the timing and they have had rocker arms bent during shipping.

dallison 09-01-2019 08:01 PM

So far i have replaced the head, exhaust gasket, intake gasket, head gasket, water pump and struggled a little with the timing belt. I have radiator hoses ordered along with the other new belts, fuel filter, and a few other small items.

I need to adjust the valves, empty the fuel tank since it has fuel that is 2-3 years old. Unless i can use something to add in like stabil to burn it up and then add new fuel. There is about a 1/4 tank of fuel in it now. Do you think if i add premium that it might be fine without draining the tank? That is a step that will be a PITA.

I have removed the pinstriping and i have a "ghost" pin stripe. It's kinda neat. The PO had tried to replace the heater motor. He had purchased an aftermarket motor and had to cut off the plug. Luckily there are only two wires and it should be pretty simple to wire up.
I love how simple these things are to repair. I have repainted the valve cover white, but it doesn't look good. Well, it does look better.

At some point i'll replace the suspension pieces. One of my other projects is to get it converted from r12 to r134a or whatever else they are replacing it with. I didn't see any adapters or stickers indicating it was converted. But i'll look better tomorrow since i really haven't looked that well for those indicators. From my research, it doesn't seem like it is too involved for this car. I will need to have a shop recover the r12 if there is anything left and replace it with new stuff.

So far this is it.

That engine compartment is going to look beautiful after you painstakingly clean every nook and cranny, and dress all of the black plastic/rubber caps, boots, and hoses.

You know it! I haven't been able to do anything in there since i had the head off for so long. The interior is pretty clean and not scratched up. I would like to either take out the carpet and clean that up or replace it.

civicdrivr 09-03-2019 02:25 PM

If you don't know how long the fuel has been sitting in there, I'd drain it. Might be a good time to do a once over of the tank as well - they're metal and prone to corrosion.

FYI - I was doing some cleaning in my garage and came across a new AEM intake that I purchased about 12-13 years ago for the DA (it was actually for my B swapped Civic that I parted before tossing this on) and never used  I also have a tri-y header for it. Not sure if you're interested, but figured I'd toss it out there.

CCColtsicehockey 09-03-2019 02:57 PM

Great thread and nice pickup. Glad to see you still hanging around here too.

dallison 09-12-2019 08:00 PM

Everything is hooked up. The only problem that i have right now is that i am not getting fuel to the fuel filter. I am getting voltage to the fuel sender. I believe that i should rule out the main relay and a fuse. The relay clicks and there are no bad looking soldering points on the board.
All grounds look to be solid and all electric connections seem to be fine.

So if i am getting voltage at the sending unit and there is no fuel making it to the front of the car and there is no noise from the pump when the car is first turned on, wouldn't you think it was the fuel pump?

If i have to replace the pump, i am certainly cleaning out the tank. It's a bit dirty.

dallison 09-13-2019 02:55 PM

I have ordered a new walbro fuel pump. I'll replace that and clean out the tank. I may not need it, but a 27 year old fuel pump has got to be replaced. There is a lot of crud in there too and i'll have to take some pics of that. This care deserves some tlc and new parts. I was thinking about just replacing the tank, but something like that might not fit as well as an original.

dallison 09-14-2019 07:56 PM

This better be the source of it not starting.

Looks like it was soaked in hot sauce.

dallison 09-15-2019 06:49 PM

mmmm hot sauce.....

Here are some clean pics...... The new pump should be here this week. I have cleaned out the tank and most of the nastyness is gone. Why put a new pump in there if it is only going to pull in dirty fuel?

I appreciate the offer, but i want to keep this thing stock.

The car is inspected! I love driving this thing. It tracks straight, accelerates nicely, brakes work nicely, handles well for a 27 year old car. I need to clean this up a bit and get the radio and hvac hooked back up.

dallison 09-23-2019 01:02 PM

Ok, i'm in a pickle.

I need to replace the auto trans cable and can't locate a part anywhere.

54315-sk7-984 is the oem part number
napa made on 0742918

Neither are sold any more or are sitting on a dusty shelf somewhere.

I have checked with advance, autozone, federal auto parts, o-reilly, napa and lkq with no success.

Is there somewhere else i need to check?
