New JDM Civic Type R faster than NSX Type S Zero

I was just watching the July 2007 version of Best Motoring Video. The drift king, Keiichi Tsuchiya, was test driving the new JDM Civic Type R around Suzuka, and he managed to achieve a lap time of 2:35.20.

For comparison, here are the lap times of the fastest JDM machines:

Civic Type R: 2:35.20
NSX-S-Zero: 2:35.44
Lan Evo VI RS: 2:36.50
RX-7 RS: 2:35.81
R34 GTR V-spec: 2:39.56

Here is a link to a screenshot of the above times:
http://www.xanga.com/tl_type_s

Here are some details about the new Civic Type R.

HP: 225ps
Weight: 1270kg (same as NSX Type R, or 10kg lighter than NSX Type S Zero)

Basically, the Type R is a hotter version of the Civic Si/Acura CSX Type S.

To think that a FWD can out do so many legendary cars blows my mind away.

Civic Type-R is one hell of a car!

There is going to be a lot of controversy over this. Good job for the CTR though.

So what makes it faster than the last gen Integra-R? K20A engine, 1190kg, LSD, etc ...

That's a very interesting question and I would really want to know too. The power to weight ratio of the new civic type R is actually worse than the DC5 Integra R. But nonetheless, on Tsukuba, the new civic is 2 seconds faster than the DC5, it had a very close battle with the newer NSX Type S. I am sure the drivers in Best Motoring explain this in detail, but I don't understand Japanese at all.

By the way, the new civic is also faster than the DC5 Type R in a 1/4mile race by about 0.2s.

And I'm guessing we won't see a new generation of Type-R rise again in this half of the earth.

he could of sneezed and it would have made that much of a time difference. When times are that close i really do not debate on which car MAY be faster since it is so close.

Yea, I would say the civic, nsx, and RX7 are just about as fast as each other, but that alone is pretty darn amazing.

Ithink the suspension setup of this car is what puts it ahead of the ITR by a few 10ths. But as stated above, those few 10ths can easily be gained back by driver error.

Everything on this Civic is basically an evolution of the goods found on the DC5 which came out 6 years ago...

.................................... [shibitsuku] TYPE R ... [integura] TYPE R (DC5)
Redline ......................... 8,400rpm ................ 8,400rpm
Power .......................... 225PS /8,000rpm ...... 220PS /8,000rpm
Torque ......................... 21.9kg m /6,100rpm .. 21.0kg m /7,000rpm
Power per liter .............. 112.5PS ................. 110PS
VTEC changeover .......... 5,800rpm ............... 6,000rpm
Bore x stroke ................ 86.0×86.0mm ......... 86.0×86.0mm
Displacement ................ 1,998cm3 .............. 1,998cm3
Compression ratio ......... 11.7 ...................... 11.5
Sparkplug Heat range .... 7th iridium .............. 7th iridium
Throttle bore diameter ... 64mm ................... 62mm
Intake manifold ............. Single tube short circuit Single tube short circuit
Air intake diameter ........ 75mm ................... 70mm
Exhaust pipe diameter ... 54mm ................... 54mm

The transaxle has shorter 1-3 gears and higher 4-6 gears compared to the DC5. It wears wider 225 tires on 18 inch rims as opposed to the 215 tires on 17 inch rims for the Integra. Everything was engineered to minimize air resistance in the engine. The header collectors merge alot more smoothly.
