Now you have a missing or non matching VIN tag. I'd say that is far worse for resale value than a painted door.

With a color like the one on his car, yes there very likely could be issues with it matching. That's how fickle paint and color can be with cars. Minor variations in paint batches (even if it's the same paint code) can make a difference, as can the factory where it happens and the specific spraying machine they use. That's why car guys get so bent out of shape about this kind of stuff. Once it's not original any more it's never as perfect. It makes a big difference in the perceived and actual value of the car.

Can't they just redo that at the factory?

I think that once a VIN is stamped onto a door/other part, you can't re-stamp another one...

And a missing VIN sticker is definitely a red flag when used car shopping...

No doubt. At least it was fixed. Otherwise it seems like a screwed up paintjob from the factory can often = taking it in the ass.
