I'm new to the forum so when this thread got bumped I read the first post and scratched my head. By the second post I had spilled my morning cup of Java in my lap! Nice pickup and I like the mods; you didn't waste anytime did you?

Congrats

(And thanks for providing a good chuckle that should last for the rest of the day!)

I can't wait to try them out. May be butt dyno/placebo but I already felt the pads are easier to modulate even at low speeds.

You should invest in an Openflash Tablet! The car ran so much better on 91 after the tune. Then with E85, I had four people in the car, going up an incline at 2.5-3k RPMs... no problem. Engine runs very smoothly. Pulls hard to redline. Everyone says this is the biggest bang for your buck mod for power, and I believe it.

E85 tune makes the stock tune look like shit. I also started putting in TC-W3 2-stroke oil for the crickets, they're much quieter now. They also occur 1/5th as often.
Yes, I've talked to the rep at OFT before. They were very genuine about their products. I've read nothing but good things about it.

I'll probably get one after suspension. I'm actually pretty satisfied with the stock engine for now. haha

It's very tempting for sure though. No question about it!

This car has taught me so much. Back to the basics. Low power, progressive loss of grip. I am now thankful for the tires this car came with, despite how poor they are for competitive use. I've been itching to get wider wheels and tires. But not yet.

Went to a Corvette club autocross. Friendly group. Even outran a few Z06s, and that was with Prius tires!

Fastest car overall was this abomination I forgot to take pictures of. '80-something Ford Fiesta with a 433ci "small block" V8 mounted midship. Not sure if this is the exact same car, but it was also orange, had different colored fender flares and C4 salad shooter wheels. 335mm wide tires all around

Next time, I'm going to borrow a gopro from someone. I also met someone there who had this crazy telemetry setup... he'd record the footage using GPS, which was linked to a tablet with an OBD2 bluetooth dongle. It showed his throttle position as he went through the course. Could be very useful.

Awesome!

Torque App has that recording ability too. You can overlay the ECU information on the video footage.

If you have an iPhone, I think it's called Harry's LapTimer or something. That works very well too I heard.

Sunday morning I went to an SCCA autocross event. Just for fun, my only real mod - E85 tune - bumped me into a somewhat open class. But I still managed to finish in the top half! I rode along with another BRZ driver in the same class, and he was running Dunlop Star Specs... the difference in grip is astounding

No GoPro this time either. I would have taken more pics, but was in a hurry to leave.

I am becoming more confident with this car! Next year I'll sign up for an annual membership for sure. Runs are in chronological order - my goal was a 35.xxx

I think I've found a new love. No, I did not sell the car! Autocross is fun, as is driving the car through twisties... but this is pure, unadulterated crack. It is a truly exhilarating experience - if you have a performance oriented car, you owe it to yourself to take it out to the track at least once.

Thunderhill Raceway, 3 mile configuration. I went two days in a row the beginning of August - first day was the driving school. No instructor, but they go over the rules and etiquette. I was passing up nearly everyone, which made my head get big. But the next day was the solo event, which had drivers of varied experience. Needless to say I let people pass left and right. Kinda bummed me out, but still awesome fun closing in on people in the corners

The next day, my buddies all got together and we decided to schedule another day. Will be going out again in October, I can't wait!!! I should have RS3/RE-11A level tires at that point, as well as a performance-oriented alignment then.

I installed a catback, and put in a high flow catted + resonated front pipe. Actually sounds like a sports car now.

At Thunderhill it was hot as shit.

In the distance is turn 5, aka the Cyclone. I struggled mightily here, though I stayed on track. It's similar to Laguna Seca's corkscrew (from what I've heard) - sharp changes of direction, steep elevation change, and you feel like you're about to drive off a cliff. Many dust clouds, screeching tire noises, and caution flags originated from this corner.

That track looks fun!!!!!

Do you have an oil cooler? Maybe I missed it. It's a must if you are going to track your car in the summer!

And which brand of exhaust set up did you go with!? Get some sound clip!

Yes, it was so fun that I couldn't believe it was legal

Subjective list, but look what I found today. Laguna Seca is definitely on my bucket list, but their noise limit is stupid. The Best Race Tracks in America

You're right - going to buy an oil cooler tonight at a local meet! I'm getting the laminova setup + non-thermostatic sandwich plate: http://www.ft86club.com/forums/showthread.php?t=42511

Don't want the oil temp to get too cool, which I feel happens with the oil-to-air setups. Gonna get Torque and a bluetooth OBD2 adapter to monitor temps.

I will try and borrow a friend's GoPro to record the exhaust. I got the Corsa - domestic owners here will be familiar with that brand. I've gotten a lot of compliments.

You would be surprised! In an autocross, of course the smaller, lighter cars excel. But you'd have a ton of fun regardless! The R/T is no slouch. I'd find a Corvette club or similar, their autocross courses tend to be wider and friendlier towards power cars. It's cheap fun, though I'd get a head sock for use with a loaner helmet.

Went to Thunderhill again last Saturday. Wet track

It dried up, then rained a bit more in the afternoon, making those sessions interesting. I wish it rained more... it was kinda scary, but fun.

This time around, I feel much more comfortable around the track. Everything comes more naturally. I think I'm becoming addicted

Do you have stock tires on?
Wet as in oily probably. Light rain is always scary

Blue looks soooo beautiful.
Pops out the design of the car so well. Love it, especially the last shot.

Oh ceramic coat it was with the header. That's right.

None of you should be shy about doing this, btw. If anything, the only idea you may need to stomach is that if something happens, insurance may not cover it... so make sure you have a tow service. And a track day session is relatively expensive. But the last thing I would ever consider it to be is a waste of money, unless you act like a tool and somehow manage to get kicked off the track.

I say this because on my first track day, there was an old man in a bone stock Ford Festiva. He he had a ton of fun!

This is a Festiva:

Yes. I'll be upgrading my wheel/tire setup soon, still debating on what size to get. Z2 Star Spec is my current choice. Wheels are a secret

Decided not to ceramic coat my header. Openflash recommended against it. Among many others, this post swayed me:

Perfect...no?

Z2 Star Spec, price is pretty good too

I wasn't expecting that about the coating but it sounds true.
Oh well, that makes me happy, no need to deal with coating if I get one.

This thread always got into my head when I had the TL
But I went with 225 on a 17x8 rims from 235.... and that was an another big mistake I did in my life.

It's not adequate for the stock power. If you start modding up the engine, you can run fatter tires.

What I learned from the 86 track junkie guys is that if you are NOT going to mod the engine at all, 17x8 with 235 is the fastest set up for a stock powered 86.

Sizing is gonna be either 225/235 for me. I prefer slight stretch over the beefy look. Stock tires are skinny for their size, while extreme performance summer tires are wider than expected.

255 is too wide. YMMV but yeah, track guys said it's a bit slower and it's harder to heat up the tires.

It just went in

the intake, that is. Nice meaty growl from around ~4k RPM and up. Gives me that nice veetak sound I've been missing. I didn't reset my ECU, but after driving for a while I did notice some more responsiveness coming on the throttle, and more power in the top end. Waiting for new tuning maps to be released, should be even more power.

not my photos. It's dark and I don't like touching my phone while my hands are dirty (I'm a litto girl)

How do you guys clean your engine bays? Realized how dusty mine is while installing. I used to wrap a bag around the alternator and spray it down with "engine brite", then hose it off. Don't think I wanna do that on this car.

I just passed 8k a while ago. Was driving around a lot in spring and summer, but the car just isn't suitable for taking more than 2-3 people so I haven't been racking up that many miles.
