MT Dec 08: ZR1 vs 599 vs GT2 vs GT-R

I'll take one of each please....
I'll take one of each please....
First Place: Chevrolet Corvette ZR1
Class-shattering power, race-car handling grip, monster brakes, and sweet control inputs leave even the bluebloods in this Chevy's wake.
Second Place: Ferrari 599 GTB Fiorano
Costs huge, but delivers huge, too. Still one of the planet's finest sports cars. And when it comes to sex appeal, forget it: The Ferrari is the only one you'd choose for a date with Gisele Bundchen.
Third Place: Porsche GT2
The Rolex of sports cars: brilliantly engineered and bulletproof. Unreal speed, hellacious grip, and superb controls -- everyday drives become laps at Le Mans.
Fourth Place: Nissan GT-R
That a machine this incredible finishes fourth shows you how spectacular the other three really are. At the price, nothing comes close. And if you think Nissan is resting on its 480-horsepower laurels, stay tuned for Act II: GT-R V-Spec.

I'd take the Ferrari. Then the Porsche. Then the Corvette. Edmunds has a write-up on it too. And I agree with their comments regarding the Chevy's interior.

Nissan got their butt handed to them by my observations, the tire took off bodywork when it exploded

IMO, the GTR held its own quite well.
if money wasn't an option, i'd take a Z06 and a GT2 over the ferrari any day...hell even a Z06 and GTR and save some money for a beater over the ferrari

Wait, if I'm reading this correctly, the tread on the Pirelli separated from the carcass at 190+ mph?!?! I would have shat through my pants.
And as much as I love Ferraris, the interior of which exquisite as it may be, the layout itself just doesn't look all that attractive. then again, I LOVE the interior of the 997 GT2 (which most people don't) and the interior of the GT-R (again, which most people don't). Not a fan of paddle shifters either, I prefer the good old clutch pedal and rowing the gears.
C6 ZR1, drop maybe $8,000 on a full Caravaggio interior..... done.

I guess this isn't in MT's Dec issue because I just got mine and its not there. It better be in January's.
Not sure why I subscribe if they keep their better tests on the web.

Of course the Vette's going to win...two more cylinders, almost 200 more horsepower. Shouldn’t the GTR be against the Z06 while the ZR1 should be going against an ENZO or a CCX?
Vette being that pumped up, I’d expect a larger margin of victory. It didn’t, which shows you how dis-appointing the ZR1 is. Where's the Dodge Viper ACR?

GTR is still the clear winner, even if it was marginally slower in some tests. There is a huge price difference between the GTR and even the 2nd cheapest car, the ZR1. The V-Spec edition is what these magazines should be comparing whenever it comes out.

yea clear winner if your only objective is price. And yea "Should" be "when" its out. They compared cars that are out, not a year or so off. Im sure they will "When" its out.

The ZR1 is clearly faster than the GT-R but it is alot more expensive (and lacks back seats for those that care about that kinda thing). Still, the Nissan did very well in this very exclusive crowd. I mean come on, a 599 and a GT2??? Those are legitimate supercars and they only beat the GT-R by .1 an .6 seconds respectively. Even the 640 hp ZR1 was only about a second faster. Plus, that 11.4 1/4 mile time they got out o the GT-R is just amazing for 480 hp/3900+ lbs!!

I dont have a video of the 599 on the Z06's but it true, the owner of the 599 is a challenge driver so he has the skill, and why didnt he pass the 355? its a fun day at the track not a full o timed event, there are only certain passing areas on the track and if you notice on the front straight he burns past the 355

It doesnt matter the price. This is the category nissan wanted to be in. Back seat??? You couldnt put a kid back there longer than a trip to the grocery store, and i dont think most that buy these cars care about that (if i was looking for a fast car and a usable back seat id look at teh CTS-V). And if you want to go that route the corvette has a larger and much more usable trunk and to me that makes it a better car, i can put a friend in the car pack our luggage, a cooler full of beer AND 2 sets of golf clubs. Lets see the others do that. Plus i guarantee in real world it gets better gas mileage.

I think MT had done a dyno run with the GT-R and got 430 to the wheels or something like that, factor in a 20 percent drivetrain loss due to the AWD and transmission and you should be over 500hp.
