Motortrend: M3 vs CTS-V vs RS5

btw it was really annoying driving a car like that with an auto tranny. god i wished it was manual.

The CTS coupe really has a horrendous exterior design with extremely awkward proportions; I think it is actually worse than the TL from the rear 3/4 view. I have no idea how anyone could choose it over the CTS sedan.

I agree with C&D ranking as putting the M3>CTS-V>RS5
I love the RS5, but I'm guessing it will have at least a 80k base price, and at that price it should be able to blow these cars away in most aspects. But it doesn't so the price isn't really justified.
I love the BMW M3 and I hope that my future leads me to one in my garage
I know you guys think that C&D and MT are biased toward bmw's but you can't neglect the fact that pretty much everyone praises the M3 as one of the best driving machines in the world.

IMO, it looks like the car was originally intended to be about a foot longer, but then GM chopped it at its current location, resulting in the comically high beltline, big butt look. When I said that the TL looks better, notice that I only said it is better from the rear 3/4 view; the TL is certainly not better from the front.

The only thing I have against the 3 Series is that it is getting progressively larger. It is now the size of an old 5 Series. That makes me think that BMW is loosing it's way with the 3. In fact I think they realized that and that is why the 1 Series was introduced. It is about the size of a 3 Series 20 years ago and that is a step in the right direction.

Exactly, but not only that, the 3 Series Bimmer IMO is the "true" BMW in terms of their old slogan, "The Ulimate Driving Machine". It is a staple car for BMW that remarkably gets better in form and function with every generation. When BMW follows up a new gen with an M3 it is always exciting and a benchmark for other sport coupes and sedans. Remember, it was challenging Porsches way before it's time, and doing quite well against the 911.

Is that really a car in competition with these 3 though?
Maybe.
I'd think the three in this comparo were stacked up against each other not only because of performance, but because of their 'luxury' status. GT-R doesn't fit in there very nicely. Are people who are looking at CTS-V's and RS5's gonna be looking at GT-R's? Maybe?

I just think it would have been an interesting addition.

I've never seen the inside of a GT-R in person but I'm assuming that it doesn't look like a Ford Pinto.
Maybe not in the actual test but as a "counterpoint" they could have compared the three against the GT-R and maybe the Z06 just to say, "If you're going to spend $70-80k, here's two options that are totally different than the M3/CTS-V/RS5 ..."
I certainly would have been interested in the comparison.

....and probably the same could be said for the Lexus IS-F, which looks downright gaudy compared to the IS350.
And towards the direction of this thread discussion, the premise of the article was clear off the bat: Where Eagles Dare: We Take America's Hottest New Performance Coupe Deep Into Enemy Territory, followed up by the third paragraph: So, no excuses and no holds barred: America's bravest versus Germany's best. In other words, let's see how Caddy's efforts stack up against the benchmark and it's primary rival.
So, as much as I love the Nissan GTR (probably my second favorite whip behind the E60 M5), it's inclusion would obfuscate the article's premise.

Someday, an RS6 Avant+
I know the C63 looks a bit odd, but it's a 4 door and not really meant for this comparison.
If it lost that hood and had a normal one, it would be really nice.

I'd take an M3 over a GT-R.... and an RS5 while we're at it. CTS-V coupe over a GT-R.... nah. CTS-V sedan, absolutely.
While we're talking about other comparisons, I think a closer match in terms of size and performance to the CTS-V is probably the M5 and E63. Or M6 and E63 coupe (is there one yet?)

I'm not a big guy 5'9 and I couldn't move my legs in the back and my head was tilted a little. Wasn't comfortable at all. It was worth it though LOL.
I don't think it was meant to fit someone in the back anyway.

The GT-R is a more purpose built animal as opposed to *, which are built upon lesser versions of the same.
As for the dubiousness of the article's premise, so much for an article featuring a vehicle attempting to measure up to the benchmark. What were they thinking?

Not to mention the fact that though the Shelby may have lost by .3 second in the 1320, it trapped 2.3mph faster.
