Motortrend: M3 vs CTS-V vs RS5
#42
Not really. The CTS-V I built came out to $68k+, while the M3/w Comp Package I spec'ed came out to $65k and some change, and that was without the ~$3k M-DCT transmission, which more people than not would probably want. Throw that option on and the the price difference between the two is trivial.

I know Car and Driver is loathed by some, but they came up with the following for the exact same comparo:
1) M3
2) CTS-V Coupe
3) RS5
I think it could go any way with these three. The performance of all three is damn close but it's hard to justify the price of the RS5. The CTS-V gets my nod for presence and aesthetics. Damn it's sweet looking

IMO, it'd be hard to pick from the 3.
I'd say they're all close competitors with each other, but likewise, they're each their own beast.
M3 - Precision driving
RS5 - Elegance
CTS-V - Raw American muscle
All high performance, but each with a different character. They all have their place in my eyes, and if I could, I'd have one of each.

I was kind of expecting it to be the other way around with CTS-V at first, RS5 then M3.
I didn't even know CTS-V Coupes were out already lol
It seemed like just yesterday I was flipping through a TopGear magazine looking at the CTS-V Coupe.

My 2 cents again.
I drove a 2011 fully loaded M3.
I bought a 2011 CTS-V sedan.
I drove several Audis (though not of the level of performance of the RS5).
I bought the CTS-V.
The M3, even when fully loaded, simply did not compared.
The V handled better, accelerated better, and, to me, had a better finish quality than the spartan M3.
There is a reason the CTS-V has been in several of the top 10 car lists the last several years.

Now back to our regularly scheduled fanboyism.

Cadillac still made a vain attempt. And I can't believe how ugly it is. The RS5 is perfectly respectable (and also lovely).
In November 2007, when CAR magazine did a comparo of Lambo, Ferrari and 911 GT2 (or 3?), here is what they wrote about the M3.
E9X = Still one of the best chassis, whatever the money.

CTS-V hands down. 2k in mods and nothing this side of the ZR1 is going to touch it.
I really hope GM comes up with a DSG or something for a sports trans one of these days.

Someday, an RS6 Avant+
You kick them all out of bed like I do.
more room on the floor for
Love all three. Tough choice.
Ugly Caddy? Um no, the 4GTL is ugly. No, Fugly. The poster child for ugly.

I wonder if the $2500 performance package they mentioned in the video (wider wheels/tires and slight height drop) have anything to do with the M3's numbers?
Regardless of the numbers, IMO the Caddy coupe is just plain ugly. I would take a sedan hands down over the coupe anyday. The RS5 is visually beautiful, but maintainance on that thing combined with the list price would make it way more expensive to have than the M3 or Caddy. I still love the M3's looks, the performance is up there with the other two obviously, and handling has always been it's forte, so I can definitely see how they came to their conclusion.
I'd still go with Bob's choice, though. Caddy CTS-V Sedan all day long!
Of course I've never driven any of them besides the M3, so this is coming from an Accord driver, so what the hell do I know.

It looks pretty awsome except for the ass, and I'm definitely an ass man.
Seriously though, the whole design of the rear of the car is either very amatuerish or trying way too hard...not sure which one but it's one of them.

Its amazing how dated the C-class looks compared to the other three. I don't like the CTS coupe at all I love the sedan, but the rear of the coupe really looks like it was hashed together at the last moment. From most 3/4 angles, it looks like a hatch...It also already looks dated IMO....The RS5 on the other hand is pure SEX. Really wish they would've went with some insane F/I setup or somehow managed to squeeze the 5.2 in there.
