more "fuel" for the fire--shell nitrogen enriched gas
i know we love discussing (arguing) about grades of gas, etc. if this is still the wrong forum for such a posting my apologies and please move to a more appropriate location.
regardless, have you seen the ads for the shell nitrogen enriched gas? claims to remove the carbon deposits in your engine....true or more advertising BS?

you will find that Tier 1 quality gas brands all use some sort of cleaning agent
chevron has techroline,
shell has nitrogen (and other stuff) added
(they might all use nitrogen for what we know)
but the fact remains that the cleaner does work over time- from the pump gas its 5000 miles of use to get old crud off the valves and pistons.
Thats why we use seafoam or bg or wynns to remove carbon and crud buildup for 20 bucks in 20 minutes, rather than 3 months--blast the valves and pistons clean!
Its smart to always run a Tier1 gas- the TL prefers it, or be prepared to do intake egr port cleanings and seafoam type cleaning more often to maintain any sense of fuel mileage on cheap brand gas which is dirtier- less efficent combustion

Drifting
I would sure like to read some references about this. I don't often buy "Tier 1" gas & have not had any such problems. For that matter I'm not sure what "Tier 1" gas is or how to recognize it.

pop the intake manifold off and look at the egr ports
dirty gas leaves behind more combustion byproducts
10% ethanol added to gas makes the problem worse!
Most name brand gas- chevron/texaco, shell,.mobil, etcetc all meet Tier 1 standards
You can learn more with a wiki seach or look for tier 1 gas in a search online
My TL runs better on Shell or chevron than am-pm gas
its usually close in price on strations next to each other, so I use one I know has cleaners included..and still follow up with occassional seafoam blast out
Ca gas is extra crud loaded- allegedly to reduce emissions- ~not just the gas mileage~

Not this again
I used to use "tier 1" gas all of the time. We have been using no-name gas now for about 5 years and the engine looks and performs is the same.
Ironically on a trip from NY to NC, we used name brand gas all of the way down, but our last fuel stop we got no name gas.... and we returned 3mpg higher on the no-name fuel then we did on any of the other name brands. Go figure.
For as many search results that you'll find praising the advantages of "tier 1" gas, you'll find as many results telling you gas is processed similarly and there is little to no difference in no-name gas vs "tier 1" gas b/c it all comes from the same place. Spend some time on google or even search AZ and you'll see what i mean.

You realize that website is owned by General Motors, right? If you do a google search on any of the companies listed on that site you'll see that they all have some affiliation with GM. Additionally, those companies pay GM to be listed as an "Approved GM Oil or Fuel". There are tons of companies who meet GM's "requirements", but only the ones who pay receive GM's seal of approval.
Not exactly a non-biased source of info.

I used to only use Shell or Chevron, but ever since I heard a review of the "best rated gas" in our area on the local news channel, I've switched to QT which got the highest rating. I get better MPGs than ever now that I've switched and it's typically a few cents lower than Shell or Chevron.
