Mom's Turn Again

Long time members will recall when my mom picked up a 2012 MDX Tech in early 2012 to replace her 10 year old RX300. Unfortunately the MDX she bought turned out to be a prolific oil burner as the J37 has a reputation of being. The oil consumption started slowly around 30,000 miles, needing a quart in between oil changes. Fast forward to the last six months and the expiration of the factory warranty, it was going through a quart every 500-750 miles so on Wednesday they signed on a 2019 Lunar Silver MDX with SH-AWD and the Tech Package. Fingers crossed this one doesn't burn oil down the road.

I'll get some more pics once the weather clears up and she gets the roof rack installed and windows tinted.

Interesting, my dad bought an 08 MDX new and at 221k doesn't burn any oil. Sorry to hear about the issue with your 2012.

I hope the 2019 is good to her, looks great! Did she consider the new RDX or just want an MDX?

The problem seems to be limited to the 2010-2013 models and not just the MDX. Same era TLX, RLX and ZDX owners report consumption issues, as well.

She needs room for two dog kennels in the back side-by-side so the RDX was out of the running there.

Congrats on the car! Did you just trade it in or did Acura help with value?

Ken1997TL 02-09-2019 05:59 PM

Solid choice. And no, the oil consumption issues will be gone with the new vehicle.

Not sure why but neither my '13 MDX or my '11 RL have it.

Nice pick up, and props to sticking with Acura! I'm sure this one will be much better, not to mention it may get better MPG!

Acura gave an extended warranty to all 3.7L motors consuming oil, fix is to put in new piston rings since old ones are getting clogged with carbon and letting oil past. 6 months unlimited miles from January and after that it's 8yrs/105K or close to that from first in-service date.

It seems to be hit or miss. One guy I found on another MDX forum has 80,000 miles on his 2013, never burned a drop while his wife's 2010 goes through quarts in between oil changes.

I think she was getting 13-14 MPG in town with the old one. Will be nice to see how this one does.

Oh...well shit. I looked everywhere and couldn't find anything related to that.

That's good to know. I was like that would suck for whomever is buying that MDX after the OP, lol

KILLA_CAM 02-09-2019 11:07 PM

Is it the MDX or the RDX that was recently updated?

MDX was refreshed for 2017 and got A-Spec trim for 2019, I think. RDX got totally redesigned for 2019 and is bad ass as hell!

TheMuffinMan 02-10-2019 01:00 PM

Dated interior on the MDX, would have suggested the RDX that was recently refreshed or waiting another year or two for refreshed MDX.

Nice ride regardless.

Looks great, I like the Silver MDX's simply because I rarely see them (around here anyway).. Best of luck to your Mom..

CCColtsicehockey 02-11-2019 07:59 AM

Great looking pickup. New MDX are nice and the grill is finally right.

RPhilMan1 02-11-2019 01:17 PM

Looks great in silver. Congrats to Mom!

Odd but true.

I only ever see blue or black MDX's. And I don't think I have ever seen a 2017+ in silver now that I come to think of it.

Congrats! I like the new MDX. I was a little disappointed with the 3.7...

Yeah IME not too many in Silver, here I see mostly white, at least 7 out of 10... then blue and black... Used to see a lot of the Gray (Graphite Luster Met) but not so much anymore..

00TL-P3.2 02-13-2019 09:51 AM

Black & White are the most common MDX here, occasional blue. Rarely see the dark red, and can't recall seeing a silver.

gatrhumpy 02-13-2019 10:12 AM

I have a Cherry Red 2015 Advance. Nice pickup!

Ken1997TL 02-13-2019 10:17 AM

Portlandia is nothing but silver Priuses, silver Teslas and silver SUVs.

None of them have their lights on in the fog/rain/drizzle.
