I'm an insurance agent and let me give you a little advice never give anyone who has a bad record a break because in the end those are the people that won't follow thru. I can't count on both hands how many times customers have called me after the fact telling me of similar situations. Always use your insurance unless you know as undisputable fact that this person is an upstanding citizen and will follow thru with their promises. If someone ever tells you their license just got reinstated or they have too many points or accidents on their record that just shows you how careless they are with their own record and that's how they will usually treat you. Their might be some of those people that follow thru but I would say its a less than 50% chance of working out but using insurance you have a 100% chance of getting your car fixed as long as you have the right coverages.

Go through your insurance and give them a full report. If he doesn't do anything in a couple weeks, have your insurance handle it.

Yep, it never fails. Once a screw up always a screw up.
I can forsee what would of happened if you gave him another chance. . . he woyuld come up with an excuse to give you a check, then when you deposit it, it would bounce and you would be hit with overdraft and bounce check charges. And when you finally see it in your end of month statement, he goes MIA. Ask me how i came to this scenario . You learn from your mistakes, or better yet, other peoples. Its what you do with the knowledge that puts you ahead in the game.
