Might need to start collecting cars with manual transmissions

And, even some of the torque converter autos are getting close to DCT shift performance.
IIRC, the C8 Vette isn't far off the PDK Porsches for shift speed.

FWIW, the C8 is a TREMEC 8DCT. The last Vette with a true slushbox AT was the C7. For the C8, chief engineer Tadge and his engineering team decided exclusively on only a DCT.

Gotcha, didn't know they'd gone to a DCT on it.
Maybe it was the C7 I was thinking of

With all of this discussion on the pros and cons of the various transmissions, in my world there is one simple truism: 6MT > 5MT > 4MT > 3MT > DCT > hydraulic automatic > CVT.

That may be a stretch, but I get your point.

Not weird at all, but not really a suitable DD for most people, not that that's the intent of this thread, overall.
The 4MT is my Midget isn't bad, but could definitely use a longer 4th or a 5th. She screams on the highway at 70mph.

My main comment in all of this is there is ALOT of variation in performance of modern non-manuals so much so I don't equate a DCT (with traditional shift forks/synchro's or dog clutches for gear selection) with a traditional torque converter/automatic transmission using planetary gearsets and multiple and one-way cutch packs. There's a huge difference in operation and performance in time to shift, power management, .....
My brother has a 2015 BMW B6 with a ZF 8AT and a friend had a 2015 BMW M6 Grand Competition with the 7DCT, despite being the same basic car (BMW M6) the charactor of the two cars was dramatically difference when driven.
So a pure manual is not equal to a AT which is not equal to a DCT, they all have their advantages and disadvantages. For the track a DCT is best, for around town in stop/go a traditional AT is best, and for me fun on backroads a MT is best.

Three Wheelin'
My son, who I done raised up right, has driven nothing but manual transmissions since he was 15. In mid 2021 he took a job maintaining a fleet of cement mixers, four of which had the 18-speed manuals; the old salts at the quarry would always haze the new kids on the block by telling them to move "that unit over to that spot", he got in, failed a few times at trying to figure out the proper technique to drive one of those things and ended up asking for some advice. "Are you stupid kid, those things are stone simple to drive, figure it out yourself." So he did; after work that day he got into one of the units and figured it out and drove it all over the quarry like a pro. He's also smart, he didn't say a word, and over the next few weeks when folks noticed him rockin' those four mixers like a pro they were like, "How'd you figure out how to drive that thing?" That's when he found out only like five drivers could drive them and not a single mechanic. Yeah, they pretty much left him alone after that.

Someday, an RS6 Avant+
I really tried hard to teach my daughter's boyfriend how to drive a manual. He had a 2003 (I think) Z3. That manual was so smooth. I got to drive a round in it and it's a fairly nice ride. But this kid (23 at the time) just could not get the hang of the clutch/gas relationship. Just kept stalling and was flat out afraid to let up and go.... I would like a manual out here in Colorado. It would be a fun summer car.
